issue9 Academic disciplines have become so specialized in recent years that scholars’ ideas reach only a narrow audience. Until scholars can reach a wider audience, their ideas will have little use.

Whether the scholars whose ideas reach a wide audience may has some effect on the use of their ideas to some extent. Whether a theory or an invention can hold up perhaps be impacted by the quantity of its defenders. Nevertheless, the final value of a theory or an invention lies in the character of itself, that is, its use value.
Nowadays, specialization has more and more influence on not only natural science but also social science. Specialists tend to focus on the research of a much narrower realm than before. The occurrence of such a phenomenon results from the improvement of human culture, on the slip side, it also promotes the development of science and technology. For example, the deep exploration of the function of human neural system makes it possible to conquer several neurons illnesses, which is hard to cure. It is not the neurologists’ basic ideas but the medicine and medical methods from those ideas take effect on the patients directly. It is almost useless to inform those patients what the ideas are.
However, with specialization pushed forward farther, people concerns more in the communication between those specialists and the public. Overspecialization, seen frequently in the media in recent years, is also a problem that can not be ignored. Not only specialists but also generalists are necessary to society. Generalists have abundant knowledge of many different areas. They know how to make full use of specialist. Let’s take going to doctors as example, if you were ill, you would turn to a generalist first, after that, the generalist might recommend a properly specialist to you. Both specialist and generalist are necessary in the case.
As far as I am concerned, the scholars don’t have to take extra time to attract more audience for their ideas. It is generalists that play the role of the bridge between specialists and the public.
