The speaker claims that the technologies not only influence even determine social customs and ethics. I quite agree with this statement. In our nowadays world, the technologies are playing a more and more important role in human society. And technology is a double-edged sword which can benefit human-beings and also can undermine even destroy human-beings if it is misused or abused.

Human's spiritual condition including customs and ethics is largely determined by the material situations such as the environment he lives, the life style he takes or even the entertainments he enjoys. And the technology just has a significant effect on people's daily life through these respects.

First of all, technology has dramatically improved the living condition of human beings. Nowadays, with the invention of all kinds of home electrical appliance, the human beings' daily life has become more and more comfortable than ever before. For example, the invention of air-conditioner make us feel cooler in summer and feel warmer in winter; the invention of light make us live comfortable at night as in the daytime; the invention of microwave oven let us cook quicker and clearer; and so on.

Secondly, technology has greatly enhanced the amount of information people would get, and make people communicate with each other more conveniently and fast than ever before. The establishment of "information highway" make people could gain information coming from every corner of the earth in time, and make a person communicates with his or her friends who are far away from he or she through E-mail instead of ordinary letters. The invention of picture phone would make two persons who are thousands of kilometers away from each other talk “face to face". The invention of fax-machines makes it possible that you send a letter, at the same time, the receiver would receive it.

Thirdly, technology make people's leisure time more varied and colorful. The invention of computer is a great piece of news to those who feel their leisure time boring and monotonous. People could use computer to play PC games, watch movie, listen music or chat with some unfamiliar persons on net.

Finally, technology could make people live healthier and longer than ever before. With the technology on medicine and surgery advancing, many diseases which could not be cured before can be easily treated even some kinds of cancer--- human killer could be cured through some special measures. The success of organ transplant makes it possible that a person whose heart or kidney is ill in function could change it to recovery from the illness.

Admittedly, technology may threaten or damage the quality of human beings-life. Such as the pornography, violence, murder cases, cheatings on the net would do bad to social customs and ethics, and these things would badly affect our children. But compared with the benefit, the side-effect is very little.

In the final analysis, technology greatly affects daily life of human beings, and it greatly enhances the quality of human material conditions, that is to say, technology determines human material life. As a result, the key force to determine social customs and ethics is technology rather than other factors, although it may have some side-effect.
