“Education is primarily a personal matter; it has little to do with school or college.”

Whether the education is primarily a personal matter which has little to do with school? The speaker claims so. Although I agree the education is mainly a personal matter, the school plays a very important role in one’s life.

Admittedly, the education is mainly one’s own matter. There is a proverb that “A great teacher never strives to explain his vision----he simply invites you to stand beside him and see for yourself.” It means that one must know how to learn by himself. The function of the teacher is only to tell you what one has to do and how to do. But the most important part in one’s learning is himself rather than any other people. No one can help him instead of comprehending the knowledge.

However, there are a lot of other factors that could affect one’s education, such as teacher and school.

First of all, the teacher plays an undeniable important role in his students’ life. After all, the most of the student’s time during a day is spent in his school. What’s more, during the classes, the teacher, who is the center in class, implants his knowledge into his students. Meanwhile, the teacher’s behavior, words, actions are all his students’ example. This is especially the truth in one’s early ages. One study examined the impact of a single first-grade teacher on his students’ subsequent adult status. The surprising results of the study have important implications. It is evidence that good teacher can make a big difference in children’s lives.

Secondly, the school plays an important part in cultivating the students not only in the knowledge but also in their characters. First, because one can’t expect the children to take messages about rules or morality seriously unless they see adults taking those rules seriously in their day-to-day affairs. Certain things must be said, certain limits laid down, and certain examples set. There is no other way. As a result, for the early year children, the most important role of the school is letting them know the true virtue of a person: the honesty, fairness, self-discipline, fidelity to task, friends, and family, personal responsibility, love of country, and belief in the principles of liberty, equality, the freedom to practice one’s faith, and so on. What’s more, to the elder students, the most important role of school is providing a well study atmosphere in which the students could concentrate all their attention at whatever they are interested in except the morality.

To sum up, although the education is mainly one’s own matter, the environments also play an important role in one’s education.
