TOPIC: ARGUMENT65 - The following appeared in a memo from the president of a chain of cheese stores located throughout the United States.
"For many years all the stores in our chain have stocked a wide variety of both domestic and imported cheeses. Last year, however, the five best-selling cheeses at our newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. Furthermore, a recent survey by Cheeses of the World magazine indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. Since our company can reduce expenses by limiting inventory, the best way to improve profits in all of our stores is to discontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses."

In this argument, the arguer recommends that the chain of cheese stores should stop stocking imported cheese and concentrate on domestic cheeses in order to increase the profits. To strengthen the conclusion, the arguer provides the evidence that the five best selling cheeses were all domestic cheeses. In addition, the arguer cites a result of recent survey that an increasing preference on domestic cheeses is presented by the subscribers of a cheese magazine. The argument is unconvincing for several critical fallacies.
Firstly, the best-selling cheeses of the newest store are not representative of cheese selling of all stores. Lacking the specific statistic evidence concerning the best-welcome cheeses of all cheese stores, it is unfounded to assume that domestic cheeses are the most satisfactory choices by customers, let alone the cheeses from Wisconsin.
Secondly, the samples in the recent survey conducted by Cheeses of the World magazine cannot reflect the general customers' choices throughout the country, as a whole. Absent the specific information about the size and randomness of the samples, the result of the survey is unconvincing.
Thirdly, even though people prefer for domestic cheeses over imported ones, it is still open to doubt that stop stocking imported cheeses, and concentrating on domestic cheeses are the best way to improve profits. According to the argument, the expenses saved by discontinue stocking imported cheeses would possibly spend on stocking domestic ones. Further more, without evidence support that it is the best way to raise profits, we cannot ignore other factors also could enhance profits. Such as providing tastier, excellent quality and cheaper price cheeses. In addition, the arguer ignores the influences from other competitive cheese stores.
In sum, the arguer fails to validate the recommendation that after stop stocking the imported cheeses and concentrate on domestic cheeses, the profits of the chain of stores would increase. To better assess the conclusion, the arguer should provide complete statistic evidence to support that people throughout of the country prefer the domestic cheeses, and that comparing with other methods to raise profits, changing inventory is the best way. |
