TOPIC: ISSUE83 - "Government should preserve publicly owned wilderness areas in their natural state, even though these areas are often extremely remote and thus accessible to only a few people."
WORDS: 640 TIME: 0:42:38 DATE: 2007-3-24
The speaker asserts that government should preserve the wilderness areas in their natural state, in spite of their extremely remote position and hardly accessible. Though this statement seems to be too absolute in the point that wilderness areas should be preserved in their natural state, I foundmentally agree with it. Wilderness areas serve indispensible functions in various fields, thus should be preserved by government.
To begin with, wilderness areas can help government to maintain our environment. Since the industry revoluation, industry developed tremendously, which result in not only more social properties, but also servere environmental destruction. Pollution, ozone holes, greenhouse effect, distinting species, all these dangerous factors treatened humanbeings. At the same time, just because of their extremely remote and unaccessible, wilderness areas can help counteract the effect of environmental destruction. First, while deforestation become more and more serious in most places, many of wilderness areas are still consists of forests or grass plains, which can help to get rid of posionous gases, and increase the quality of air. Various plants that transfer carbon dioxide, the main reason of greenhouse effect, into oxygen. As a result, the harmful effect can be diminished. Moreover, wilderness areas can also serve as the endangered species's habitats. Because these areas are hard for human to reach, species that are near to distinct due to overhunting can suvive in their last asylum. It is now one of government's most important responsibilities to control the environmental destruction. So since wilderness areas can help to maintain the endangered environment, government should take measures to preserve them.
Furthermore, wilderness areas are very important for scientific researches. Governments have responibilities to encourage scientific researches so that the whole society can develop. The fact is that many fields of scientific research require reasearch sources that have not been touched by humanbeings, which can almost only be served by wilderness areas. For instance, the archaeologists must work in the remote wilderness areas to search for relics of ancient human or other lives, as any valuable ancient remainings must have been destroyed by human activities in other not-so-remote areas. And the natural land shape can also give geologists precious datas that can help reveal the trend of geological movement. What's more, some researches that either have potential danger to the public or require large amounts of land can only be carried out in these wilderness areas. For example, space centers are usually set in wilderness areas, like China's Jiu Quan rocket launch center. By doing so, the potential danger to the local residents can be prevented. Because wilderness areas are indispensible for scientific researches, government should try to preserve wilderness areas.
Admittedly, the statement is too absolute in the assertion of preserving wilderness areas in their natural state completely. I concede that wilderness areas should be preserved in their natural state in a certain degree, however, we should see the whole thing pragmaticly and make good use of these wilderness areas, insofar that their important functions are not influenced. For instance, properly exploit of some of wilderness areas can change them into national parks, which can serve as places of interest, and both help to collect money for protection and draw public's attention of environmental protection. A good example is the Yellow Stone national park. Under proper management, most wilderness areas in the park are still in their natural state, while it brings great financial revenue to the American government every year as well.
In sum, as government should try to keep environment fit for human and encourage scientific researches, it should take measures to preserve publicly owned wilderness areas, as these areas can both help maintain environment and benefit scientific researches. What we need to notice is that we need not necessarily keep these areas absolutely untouched. In case that most of them are kept, government should make good use of them.
