The speaker alleges that society does not place enough emphasis on the intellect. I concede that in some particular regions -- such as business, politics -- intellect has not received enough attention that it desire. However, in some other fields, such as science, arts and so on, intellect has been considered at top primary.

To begin with, in the world of business, profits but not intellect is which companies most concert about. They do everything they could for only one purpose -- to pursue more profits. In order to serve this goal, they rely on brands, promote angles, advertisement rather than the quality of their products, which represent the intellect. Consider, for example, today's publishing and book-selling industries. Publishers are relying more and more on their brands rather than the content of the books. Today's mass-market books might be replaced by books which are essential the same, expert for promote angles.

When it comes to the world of politics, hardly do the public leaders pay enough attention to the improvement of their policy. They are thinking more and more about the how to acquire a better position in next election, how to hold their image to the public. To pursue these might be helpful in their career in time which is not long, however, it ultimate yields to the substance of intellect, history would judge it. For instance, history will remember Teddy Roosevelt's achievement of building the Panama Canal -- not his appearance.

However, reasoning and other cognitive skills are being taken at top primary in the fields of science, arts and so forth. In these fields, reasoning is the basic skill of research, it is hard to imagine that scientists who without the ability of reasoning could make a significant breakthrough. All great advancements we human made is constructed on the skill of reasoning. For instance, Copernicus put out sun-centric theory by reasoning about the old earth-centric view, Colombo discover the New World by the reasoning that the earth should be round. With out their reasoning, our world would maintain it used to be.

In the final analysis, the speaker overlooks that in the fields like science and arts, intellect is still considered as the most important factors that we should take enough notice to. And in other regions such as business and politics, people will ultimate find out that only through advertisement or images is hard to maintain success in longer term.
