TOPIC: ARGUMENT65 - The following appeared in a memo from the president of a chain of cheese stores located throughout the United States.

"For many years all the stores in our chain have stocked a wide variety of both domestic and imported cheeses. Last year, however, the five best-selling cheeses at our newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. Furthermore, a recent survey by Cheeses of the World magazine indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. Since our company can reduce expenses by limiting inventory, the best way to improve profits in all of our stores is to discontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses."

This argument is well presented, but not well reasoned. It concludes from the fact that the five best-selling cheeses at their newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses and the result of a survey that the need for domestic cheeses is increasing that the best way to improve profits is to stop selling imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses. If you look into it very carefully, you will find that this relationship between its reason and result can not be found. I will present you the details.

First is about the five best-selling cheeses which were all domestic cheddar cheeses. They just saw the five best-selling cheeses but did not see the others. As long as there exists many kinds of cheeses, there exists best-selling ones. However, we can not deny that they just one part of the whole business. There is no sign saying the five kinds take part of more than ninety percent of the whole profits of this chain of cheese stores. If the store changes their cheeses composition with less consideration, they may lose lots of profits. Consequently, the first support is not persuasive.

Then look at the second supporting fact. The survey said there was an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers, which has an ambiguous meaning. We can not find out whether the total number of domestic cheeses selling is more or less than the imported cheeses. It is certainly possible that although the selling of domestic cheeses increased, the total profit also less than the imported ones. We can not give a conclusion just with some numbers that are not enough. So the second reason is not supportive as well.

Since the conclusion should not be like this according to those cases, my opinion through this problem is properly increase or decrease the number of every kind of cheeses due to the selling situation. It is variety that consumers like. If the stores concentrate on the best selling and simply sell those only kinds, consumers will have less choices leading to the dislike of these stores.

According to the analysis above, this chain of cheese stores should not discontinue stocking many of their varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses. This is not only unreasonable, but also not the right way to increase their profits. The logic analysis in this argument is incredible and the author must do more consideration before writing it.
