Issue 144
History has ever witnessed so many great painters, musicians, playwrights and so on, such as Van Gogh, Beethoven, Shakespears, whose masterpieces arehallmarks for those brilliant personalities of different periods of time. Yet,critics, whose identities have long been forgotten, also give society somethingof lasting value.
Artists play a crucial role in the creationof the artistic works. Usually, in their search for a particular form of art,the artists work with a unique understanding for human’s mind and soul, andrelationship between nature and human beings. Great art works advocate the goodqualities of human world, attack the evil behavior and thoughts, and provideendless spiritual wealth to contemporaries and later generations. For example, RodinAugust’s sculptures show us his profound understanding of beauty, Mozart’s melodieslead us into a peaceful and purified world with love and enthusiasm to life, andRomain Rolland’s literatures inspire us struggle for Justice and hope. Suchvalues of art works would never disappear with the elapse of time, but cherishedby successive generations.
Compared with artists, critics are far lessfamous and their work is always at issure. They sometimes offer so different andeven controversial critics toward the same work that the original taste of thework might be shadowed by too many such comments. As a matter of fact, the soulof the work appears no longer sparkling, and the readers, or the viewers orlisteners become confused to appreciate the work. That is why many literaryteachers ask their students to read the original works and try to record theirgenuine feelings aroused by and echoing to the author’s descriptions, without relatedcritics’ commentary works.
Despite the above negative aspects, critics’work is meaningful or even necessary. In fact, the critics’ views to someextent contribute to the artists' creating valuable things for the society. Firstly, critics can help us understand and interpret art. A critic who is familiar witha particular artist and his or her works might have deeper insights about thoseworks than ordinary people. Perhaps they can offer us a fresh angle to appreciatesomething hidden in the work that merely from the surface ordinary people areunable to catch. For example, how can most of us understand Franz Kline’spaintings without critics’ help? Since his paintings are all style of AbstractExpression, its aesthetic value beyond ordinary people’s understanding range. In fact, we build our understanding on his paintings on the basis of critics’comments. Secondly, critics can greatly impulse the development of Art. Thefamous realism and modernism debate between Georg Luacs and Bertolt Brechtgreatly promoted the art development. Also, ClementGreenberg, American critic, propelledthe development of Modernist Art. Similarly, Pierre Restany, a famous Frenchcritic, led the movement of New Objectivity in the art history. Finally, acritic can provide feedback for artists; and constructive criticism, if takento heart, can result in better work.
In sum, different and even controversial criticisms might sometimes baffle people to appreciate works of art. However, critics’ workcontributes a lot to the lasting value created by artists. As the time passing, the greatest feats must be those which are created by artists and evaluated by critics.
