ARGUMENT220 - The following appeared in an article in a magazine for writers."A recent study showed that in describing a typical day's conversation, people make an average of 23 references to watching television and only 1 reference to reading fiction. This result suggests that, compared with the television industry, the publishing and bookselling industries are likely to decline in profitability. Therefore, people who wish to have careers as writers should acquire training and experience in writing for television rather than for print media."WORDS: 467 TIME: 00:30:00 DATE: 2007-8-3 16:00:57At the first glance, the statement appears convincing. The author get the conclusion that people who wish to have careers as writers should acquire training and experience in writing for television rather than for print media on the assumption that the publishing and bookselling industries are likely to decline in profitability. To substantiate the assumption, the author cites a study which points out that people make less references to watching television than reading fiction. However, further scrutiny reveals that the evidence can not lend a credible support to the conclusion.Primarily, the study accomplishes nothing toward bolstering the assumption that publishing and bookselling industries are likely to decline in profitability for the following two reasons. On the one hand, whether the study is statistically representative is open to doubt. How many people participate in the study and what about their educational background is not given. There is a good chance that only a few people attend the study, which of course makes the study meaningless. It's equally possible that the participators are most ill-liberators who even do not know how to write a word not mention to read books.[你的意思是说,更别提读书了,但这个用法对吗?我查了一下,好象没有这个用法,建议核实一下]On the other hand, even if the survey is strict enough and warranted, there is no evidence to say that the publishing and bookselling industries are likely to decline in profitability. As we all know, different people have different favorite books. Therefore, there is always no common topic on reading books while the TV programs are limited to several topics. Consequently, in the conversation, people are likely to talk more about TV than Books. Furthermore, even if there are less people reading fiction now, however, fiction can not represent all kinds of books which may contain poem, magazine, and textbooks and so on. Therefore, it's too hastily to reach the conclusion that the publishing and bookselling industries are likely to decline while there is a high possible that people are more likely to read other kinds of books instead of fiction. Secondly, even if the profitability will indeed decline in the publishing and bookselling industries, it's too ramshackle to say that people who wish to have careers as writers should acquire training and experience in writing for television rather than for print media. As we all know, many books which are not written for television can be accepted by TV through another form. At the same time, there is no evidence to indicate that the profitalility will increase in TV while the declining of books. Therefore, it's unwarranted to get the conclusion. To sum up, the statement suffers several flaws mentioned above. To better evaluate the statement, the author should point out the reliability of the study and to demonstrate that the profitability of books and publishing will actually decline while the profitability of works for TV will increase
