I can clearly recall the first time I touched a computer, an early Apple computer at a computer introductory class in 1995; I was totally fascinated by this little colorful magic box. I had a strong feeling that my future would be one way or another linked with the miraculous machine. Now several years later, as an undergraduate student at Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT), with great interests and potential in Computer Science, confidence in my extraordinary learning competence, and diligence in research, I am writing to apply for admission to the Computer Science Master program at the University of Melbourne to pursue the deep joy that Computer science itself can take me in all my life.
Communication Engineering, the specialty I majored in as an undergraduate student, is a cross-functional, multidisciplinary subject enhanced electricity and electronics science with intensive compulsory courses training in Mathematics, computer technology, industrial electronics, and instrumentation. Besides my well-performed academic record with a GPA 87.5 out of 100 in computer science related courses, what made the study so exciting to me is this subject expanding astonishingly at a great rate and improved my capability to identify topics both inside and outside of the Computer Science realm.
Intending to understand the powerful and essential tool deeply, I poured great energy into the study of Computer Science. Other than studying relevant courses, such as Data Structure and Algorithms, Computer Architecture, and Operation System in school and by myself, I worked in China Mobil, the largest Asian telecom operator, selected as an intern to practice skills of computer network management. This practical application in real business world was complicated and challenging, and it helped me to develop my special interest in computer science and wish to become a successful researcher in the field.
With full awareness of the difficulty for undergraduate students to participate in actual research, I tried my best to seize every opportunity to participate in real project. I dedicated myself in my graduation design for half a year working on our project of distributed computing and developing a smart home network. Assisted by two other team members, I examined the three most popular network technologies, UPnP, OSGi and Jini, and finally chose Jini concerning the superiority of Java’s cross-platform capability. I challenged myself to lift the Jini’s limitations in designing and coding by adding a new service to the network and rewriting the user end code to improve its less advanced resource management mechanism. The result has shown that my solution expresses the idea of a lighter and quicker framework, which is crucial in home networks due to limited capability of computing. Our project, sponsored by Sino-German Joint Software Institute, was highly appreciated by both our advisor and the German visit technicians. These practical experiences raised my careful and serious attitude toward research work, improved my diligence, persistence, creativity and strong sense of teamwork, and most importantly, motivated me to continue my pace in computer science relevant academic area.
September 2005, I entered Zhejiang University for my postgraduate study. At the same time, I have been selected as a research assistant in Telecommunication and Information Research Center working on the project of the navigation and control of moon rover based on computer vision. This research project is one of the key projects sponsored by National Natural Science Foundation. I was responsible for surveying various algorithms such as particle filter, linear and quadratic iterative least squares, and evaluating their benefits and disadvantages under the environment of moon. Due to the complexity of these algorithms, I spent days and nights in the lab examining all the codes, testing every module, even improving the algorithms to make them run correctly. I have proposed a new framework of moon rover localization and changed particle filter’s algorithm to meet the need of it. The paper presenting my idea and outcome has been submitted to and evaluated by an EI-indexed journal, and now I am waiting for its publishing.
My undergraduate and postgraduate study and research experiences have given me the opportunities to realize my intended research interest, academic strengths and weaknesses. The deeper I went into the world alive that machine and intelligent computer programs can identify and recognize object automatically and complete the tasks we set, the more I attracted by it. This initiated my wish to pursue a postgraduate study and professional career in Computer Science. The University of Melbourne, as a leading university located in the beautiful metropolis Melbourne, not only attracts me by the depth and breadth of your academic programs and state-of-the-art educational facilities, but also by the perfect fitness of my intended interests, including systematical Distributed Computing courses, the field I have strong interest in and have a gift. This is exactly the kind of opportunity I am seeking to further my expertise that is practically challenging.
I believe that “Each person can only hold enough knowledge to add one small rung to the ladder, but together we can climb to the moon”. I am willing to devote my rung to the ladder of Computer Science and choose University of Melbourne to be my first step.

Dear Administrator,
Happy New Year!
I wrote this letter to explain some of my bachelor courses related to computer science and stress my programming background.
________________________________________________________________
1. I have good knowledge of programming obtained from my courses and my graduation design – Jini Home Network, which is based on Java programming language. In the design, I have implemented and tested Jini in an environment of home network. The task was very challenging and required strong ability as a programmer. The following description of my graduate design is quoted from my personal statement. Please refer it for more information. Also, I attached my paper on Jini at the bottom of this email.
"I dedicated myself in my graduation design for half a year working on our project of distributed computing and developing a smart home network. Assisted by two other team members, I examined the three most popular network technologies, UPnP, OSGi and Jini, and finally chose Jini concerning the superiority of Java's cross-platform capability. I challenged myself to lift the Jini's limitations in designing and coding by adding a new service to the network and rewriting the user end code to improve its less advanced resource management mechanism. The result has shown that my solution expresses the idea of a lighter and quicker framework, which is crucial in home networks due to limited capability of computing. These practical experiences raised my careful and serious attitude toward research work, improved my diligence, persistence, creativity and strong sense of teamwork, and most importantly, motivated me to continue my pace in computer science relevant academic area."
2. I have had a good education of most core computer science courses in doing my bachelor degree. Please refer to my bachelor transcripts for details. The courses I have taken and grasped including
VC++ Object Oriented Programming (This course included Data Structure and Algorithms, important components of so-called Object-Oriented programming. I received 83/100 in this course.);
Computer Practice (In this course, every student did a project in developing a required software with VC++. My score is 80%.);
Technology and Application of Workstation (This course contained a deep dig of operation systems running on Workstations. 96%.);
Discrete Mathematics (85%.);
Linux Operation System (Included the administration of Unix like operation system and shell programming. 93%.)
Microcomputer Principle and Interface Technique (I did not prepare well in the final exam due to a family incident. 68%.)
Specialized Practice (I worked as an intern in the famous China Mobil company for 5 weeks, responsible for the management of computer networks. 95%.)
Java Program Design (Basic and advanced Java programming practice. The questions in the final exam were drawn from SCJP practice tests. 79%.)
______________________________________________________________
In conclusion, with a fairly comprehensive understanding of and enthusiasm in computer science and programming, I need your computer science courses to switch smoothly from electronic engineering to computer science, the area I desire to work in.
I send the new version of my personal statement and my Jini paper too. Note that the personal statement sent with this letter is different from the one I have sent you in the application package 3 weeks ago – this one is the new version. I added the information about why I love computer science so much and explained my choice in more details. Also, note that the language used in my Jini paper is Chinese, but there is an English abstract which explains the main idea of this paper.
Thank you and I am anxiously waiting for you reply!
Sincerely,
Zhu, xxxx
