ISSUE99 - "In any realm of life-whether academic, social, business, or political-the only way to succeed is to take a practical, rather than an idealistic, point of view. Pragmatic behavior guarantees survival, whereas idealistic views tend to be superceded by simpler, more immediate options."

在任何生活领域中----无论是学术、社会、商业还是政治----获得成功的唯一道路就是采取现实的而不是理想化的观点。实用的行为确保了生存，反之理想化的观点正在趋于被更简化的和更直接的选择所取代。

I concede the assertion insofar as that people should take a practical point of view, which is a useful and necessity in modern increasing complex society. However, I think the idealism is of equal important at the same time for people who eager to live a better life and attain great achievement.

Admittedly, pragmatism prevails in this ever-changing society. Before people make any decision, they are inclined to weigh the benefit of it, if they can get more from certain action than loss, then they will do it. This way of making decision is understandable in all area of life. For a manager, what he care about is how to maximize the profit of his company, if he fails to do this, he may risk him in the state of been fired. For a political leader, he must take effective measures to solve immediate problems in the society, such as unemployment, environmental protection and so forth, because this is the most direct and effective way for the public to judge his ability as a qualified leader. When we turn to field of academic research, the situation is the same, modern scientists are inclined to focus on the areas that are more easily to make direct contribution to the society, only in this way, they can become famous and get more opportunity to further their research work. Thereby, from this prospective, we can learn that pragmatism is the social trend, anyone who do not follow this trend have little chance to survive in modern society, not mention to success.

When we are aware of the significance of pragmatism, however, the positive function of idealism should not be ignored. Idealistic views mean that we keep a clear purpose for what we are doing, which prevent us from been lost. To certain extent, we can regard the idealistic views to individual is like the beacon for a boat in the extensive ocean. As we all know, it is hard for the boat to find its way to the destination if there are no light from beacon to point out the way for it. There is a famous saying said that, if there is no direction then there is no meaningful life. Furthermore, people with idealistic views are inclined to be more confident when confronting difficulties, many of which they may foresee at the beginning, which means that people with idealistic view are more likely to be success in the future. Thereby, it is important for people to keep idealistic view in them.

In fact, a person can be both idealistic and pragmatic at the same time; the two quite often benefit from each other rather than mutual exclusive. Taking the forgoing example again as the case under discussion, for a manager of a big company, apart from taking earn more money for shareholders, he should keep idealistic views in mind, such as social responsibility, which will earn a better reputation for the company and them helps its products become more popular in the market, in other words, this kind of idealistic views does not damage the company's practical interest, otherwise, it helps the manager reach his practical goal. Moreover, idealistic views always mean that we have a long-term goal in mind. To reach long-term goal, we have to fulfill present goals or practical goals, step by step all practical goals combined together ultimately lead us on the way of success.

Simply put, to better our lives and make great contributions to the society, we should integrate both idealism and pragmatism in us. They are equal for us on the way to make great achievements; either of them should be ignored. Pragmatism secures us survive in the society while idealism leads us to thrive.
