207. "Rituals and ceremonies help define a culture. Without them, societies or groups of people have a diminished sense of who they are."

The culture is regarded as a people's spirit, which is derived from history and transmitted from generation to generation. While the rituals and ceremonies are always one of the most carries and embodies of the culture, and play an indispensable role in defining a culture.

As an concrete form, the rituals and ceremonies reflect and develop the culture. Going to the church on Sunday as a Christian not simply reminds one's religion belief, but also instruct how to learn traditional culture and spiritual heritage. Each year the most important ceremony for Chinese people is the Spring Festival, which reminds each Chinese people the importance of the identity of culture and nation. Spring Festival is not only the family reunion, but also explains the Chinese culture of root. And it is necessary to visit friends and the parents, because respect on friendship, parents and the old people is the traditional merit. For two thousand years, Spring Festive as an ancient custom has taken the responsibility of helping people remember and developing the Chinese culture. On National Day, in China some ceremonies are held to commemorate the establishment of this country and celebrate her great progress and development, which inspire the public patriotism and the collective consciousness.

While, rituals and ceremonies are just only one form of the carriers of culture, and some other forms could also help people to define their cultural identity. History education is regarded as an effective measure to strengthen and define the national culture, which explains the value system of a nation, strong belief of their spirit, and the special customs, as well as the unique national identity. The existence of the craftsmanship and historic heritages recode the various forms and contents of the arts in the culture. And those provide the insight to the root of who they are, where they came from, and what characters flowing in their blood. Culture is just like a net covering above every aspect of the people in societies or groups, from the Chinese noodles, English fish and chips, Italian pizza, American KFC to Chinese Great Wall, British Big Ban, and French Eiffel Tower.

Compared with others, the rituals and ceremonies help to define the culture more comprehensive. Even though we could not deny the effects to indicate culture from other forms such as life styles, staple food, rituals and ceremonies tell the difference and special culture directly. On Spring Festive, not only the staple food of China would be served, but also many other details of the customs and ceremonies about the eating can be acquainted. Certainly, the content of ceremony extends the service of food, including performance of various Chinese indigenous operas, plenty of customs, and so on. Each ritual or ceremony is just an simple miniature of a culture of society or group.

In sum, rituals and ceremonies as an important form play role in reflecting culture, developing culture and defining the culture.
