TOPIC: ARGUMENT14 - The following appeared in a memo from the owner of Green Thumb Gardening Center, a small business serving a suburban town.

"There is evidence that consumers are becoming more and more interested in growing their own vegetables. A national survey conducted last month indicated that many consumers were dissatisfied with the quality of fresh vegetables available in supermarkets. And locally, the gardening magazine Great Gardens has sold out at the Village News stand three months in a row. Thus, we at Green Thumb Gardening Center can increase our profits by greatly expanding the variety of vegetable seeds we stock for gardeners this coming spring."

This argument is well-presented at first glance, but it fails to lend sufficient evidence to support the conclusion. The author argues that local residents are dissatisfied with the vegetables' quality in our supermarkets by a national survey, and our company should expand variegated seeds to profit from the next spring. Considering the evidence provided by the author, I strongly believe that the argument rests on a series of unsubstantial assumptions.

Firstly, the national survey suffers from a statistic problem, which renders the survey's result unreliable. The arguer tells us that "many consumers”, however, the speaker fails to indicate the percentage of these consumers, so it is possible that these consumers just account for a little percentage. This evidence is far too vague to be meaningful. Even though this survey is valid, the author can not assume that the nationwide survey about consumers' dissatisfaction applied equally to this suburban town. It is possible that the consumer in this location may not dissatisfy with vegetable quality and even enjoy a high quality of vegetables. Without ruling out such possibility, it is unfair to conclude that the resident in this suburban town may dissatisfy with the quality like other regions.

Secondly, the author fails to give an more convincing evidence other than the popularity of the magazine Green Garden to conclude the residents are interested in planting the vegetable by themselves. There is not definite factor included in this argument to refer to the content of this magazine. It is possible that the main theme of Green Gardens is something about the growing flower and not the vegetable. Assuming that this magazine is about the growing vegetable, the arguer can not persuade us to regard the local people as becoming more interested in growing vegetables by the vague number of the publication of Green Gardens. Although the magazine is continuously sold out in the past three months, the argument fails to supply of the number of this magazine every month which may be very small. Therefore, this evidence can not justify the popularity of growing vegetables.

Finally, assuming more and more people in this town want to grow the vegetable by themselves, the author could not consider the plan of expending variety of vegetable seeds must be profitable in the future. If the cost of increasing the kind of vegetable seeds is a huge one, the company may meet a seriously deficit instead of the improvement of profit. If the arguer can not exclude these scenarios above, he can cot consider the plan will offset the expensive cost and profitable as the argument predicts.

To sum up, the author fails to strengthen the claim, because the evidence cited in this argument does not persuade us to believe what he maintains. To make the argument more convincing, the arguer would have to provide more information regarding the content of the magazine Green Gardens, the details about the statistic of the survey and the operation of this new plan for stocking seeds. Therefore, if the arguer has included the factors mentioned above, this argument would have been more thoroughly and logically acceptable.
