This course is designed as an introductory survey of urban design
! y+ v+ R* |$ [; q' y, ]0 Qmethods associated with both practice and research. The course begins with a series of discussions
7 d) L5 N+ j* E1 G3 pon the field of urban design, attempts at definition, history of the field, basic epistemology, traditional

6 @ G- @8 L5 ?' v8 B9 S; Y8 X }The first half of the course concerns issues and methods in urban design practice, situated either in

portion of the course include: design processes, land use controls and development standards, code) T6 G4 E: c ~$ ~
writing, regulation, design guidelines, non-computational representation techniques, design
, p4 R0 R% ]+ d* H, bparticipation, urban design planning and strategizing.

and academic settings. We will review common models of research design within the field and the. j$ W& Z/ u" W3 I+ h
increasing use of social science methods in response to external pressures. Students will be exposed
0 n& A) d5 _0 `to various research methods used to understand and analyze urban form, social behavior and1 S0 G ~7 J) a5 g
environmental psychology. We will also examine various methods in built environment analysis,
& f. m/ _5 g3 f4 ~" }including both morphology and typology. Both qualitative and quantitative methods will be examined

also serves as a required methods course for the urban design concentration. It is strongly
