History, broadly defined as recording of human behaviors, can not vividly record every thing about every one. After reading a book of history, we are often impressed by the shining names and their great deeds. It is traditionally historians' focus to describe great characters, in aim that the audience would be inspired to pursue great personality. However, this may be unfair for the other members who also participate in these significant events. After all, without support and active participation of their fellow members, the famous individuals would have been unable to succeed in their daring endeavors.
History show special favor to a few individuals. It was their good fortune that they managed to consistently remain in the limelight. For instance, history immortalized Winston Churchill for his great leadership in World War II. It can not be denied that his speeches gave courage to an entire nation. The efforts of Winston Churchill can never be undermined. Huge amount of publicity available to the prime minister would ensure the mention of the name Winston Churchill in history books for many years to come. However, Britain would have been unable to defend itself without the sacrifices of the soldiers on the battle field and the various kinds of supports from Britain citizens. And the battle of Britain would not be won without the daring plans made by the British commanders. Yet, these people who are behind the scenes never find any mention in history text books. While Winston Churchill is remembered as a great figure who contributed greatly to the liberty and freedom of Britain, these people who also served their talents and even dedicated their lives to defend their homeland remain unknown.
Is it fair for these unknown contributors? Or is this way of writing history text books fit for education of new generations? On the one hand, it may set great examples for youngsters, inspiring them to work hard and become a great figure. On the other hand, the style of history text may lead to their depreciation on the efforts of common people, and in the end leading to the depreciation of themselves. After all, there's little chance for people to remain in limelight, most people are making unsung efforts. Too much emphasis on the fortunate individuals is likely to cause vanity and impatience in daily work among the young generation. Rather than attracting other's attention to be in the limelight, fulfilling one's responsibility is always more important in contribute to a harmonious society. Therefore, the effort of every responsible person should also be commemorated in the study of history.
Individual may play an important role in historical changes, but significant trends are usually made possible by groups of people standing beside them. These persons who made their efforts to shape the world should also be recognized. This would remind us of our own responsibility to the world.
