7、"The video camera provides such an accurate and convincing record of contemporary life that it has become a more important form of documentation than written records."

In this era of rapid development of society and significant advance of technology leading to sweeping change in each aspect of our daily life, the video camera provides us a more accurate and convenient way of recording contemporary life and a form of documentation. However, it doesn’t mean that the role video record plays surpass the function of written records and will substitute for it. Both video recordings and literal materials play an irreplaceable role in accounting and documenting our life and society.

To begin with, video record is efficient and significant in providing a objective, accurate and convincing means of recording. It is unexceptible that however skillful and keen a journalist or recorder is, he cannot give an literal account which is able to cover every aspect of it and understood by each of his reader of the event occurred such as an accident, a sport game. While a video recorded will enable the scene and event to reappear. In addition, video is able to record much more details of an event or experience, which will be of significant importance when the latter would like to come into certain aspects of it that may be neglected by a written recorder. Moreover, video record is more difficult to be faked compared to written record so that it is more convincing.

In spite of the advantages of video record, it doesn't mean that the importance and function of written record pales in comparison with it. Video record, as a means of documentaion, is still disadvantagous in certain aspect of application. For instance, whether the video is recorded in tape or digital video, it will contain a comparably larger volum, while the literal account will take only several words or bytes in computer. In addition, the transportation of video recordings is less efficient as a result of its larger volum and the possiblity of distortion. It is also inconvenient to search for certain information in video materials, while one will follow the catalog of a written material and quickly find what he is looking for.

Moreover, there are still certain matters and respects of our life that a video record cannot effectively convey. The video record is of no use in documenting quantitive information such as satistical figure, mathematical formula or results of investigation. The subjective state of mind and theory of academic study cannot be expressed in a video. It will be unable to convey a person's mental statement, a philisopher's thinking and conviction, a scientist's theory and principle. Literal account will be more effective in inspiring one's mind and explaining a complex theory or fact, while a video record is unable to convey an author's emotion or a logic constition. For this reason, the written record as a means of documentation will be irreplaceable in certain aspects.

In sum, video records provide us an accurate, objective and complete way in recording temporal events, while written records convey quantitive, meaningful and abstract information. Both of them contribution to give an account of different aspects of our life and society so that the importance of neither should be underestimated.
