In this memo, the president of a cereal company suggests that by adding nutrient of soy protein to their Wheat-Ocereal, they can increase profits and improve the health of their customers.However, this conclusion is insufficiently bolstered by only a recent study presented by the president.

Firstly, the study that shows the correlation between the intake of soybeans and lower cholesterol level fails to prove the causal relationship between them. In other words, eating soybeans at least five days a week, which is what the subjects did, does not guarantee alow cholesterol level. There might be many other factors contributing to ahealthy cholesterol level, such as the amount of daily physical exercises, the intake of other nutrients, the possession of detrimental habits … I would not be surprised that a bibulous person, who likes fatty foods and detests physical activities would not maintain a normal cholesterol level, regardless of the soybeans he eats.

Even thought the addition of soy protein has a positive effect on the health of customers, it is hasty to assert that it will increase the sales. The strategy aims at the customers who are concerned about their health. Is this proportion of customers considerable in way that they can influence the sales? Assume a great many of people are concerned about their health, how many of them are really worried about their cholesterol level? Even if there are many, they might not know the fact the intake of soy protein is beneficial as revealed by the recent study, or they might not want to believe this study.

Moreover, the profits of the company can also be dramatically impacted by the changes that come along with the addition of soy protein. For example, the new nutrient might change the flavor a littlebit. The regular customers can possibly recognize this change. It is no double that the loss of regular customers would be highly undesirable. Besides, the costs of fortifying wheat-O cereal with soy protein certainly need considering. The costs must be estimated. They want to make sure the addition of soy protein is worth the cost. There might be more potentially negative effects.

In sum, the argument is unsubstantiated asit stands. In addition to the unreliable study, the arguer fails to provide sufficient sales information, which can remove our unwarranted assumptions.Furthermore, the arguer should have taken into account the defects of this strategy, such as the extra costs and the altered flavor.
