Assignment: Should people prefer new things, ideas, or values to those of the past?

It is superficial to equate “new ideas” with “advanced ideas”, and blindly pursuing newer things while indiscriminately forgoing older traditional ones is definitely unadvisable. The wisdom and systems of value of ancient times have always served as inexhaustible sources of inspiration for contemporary people. Therefore, we should by no means prefer new things to older ones without careful consideration.

Consider, if you will, ancient Greece thousands of years. It was a era dominated by the mind of some of the greatest philosophers ever produced in human history, such as Socrates, Plato and Aristotle. Even today, their ideas are still recognized as valuable and our modern philosophy is largely based on the system of philosophy founded by these people who lived in antediluvian times. One of Plato’s most famous work, the Republic, has always maintained its position on the best sellers list in modern times, and none of the philosophers today can exert greater influence upon people’s thinking than the ancient philosophers did. Obviously, even nowadays, ideas originated in the old times still have their values, and the luminance of immortal truths will never fade.

Furthermore, modern people do not share the same system of value with ancient people, because the trend of history and the progress of the society forced almost everything to be transformed or converted. Nowadays, as the process of modernization and globalization goes on, people are leading lives with significantly quicker tempos and materialism is rife in a lot of people’s “modern” systems of value. Nevertheless, there is still a group of people who have a deep comprehension of the “essence” of life, and they pursue a higher standard of living by secluding themselves from the hectic urban lives and lead idyllic lives in the countryside, just like the lives of ancient people. In conclusion, when people doubt whether they really fit in the “modern” system of value, they tend to seek inspiration from history and revert to an “ancient” lifestyle, which is most suitable for them.

Citing from the evidences listed above, ideas and systems of value of the old times are even more advanced under certain circumstances for certain people. So it makes no sense to prefer new things to old things all the time.
