Facing the issue that whether the arts reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of society. In my view, I tend to agree that in most cases, because the arts root from the society, arts authentically can reveal the hidden ideas and impulses of a society. In addition, in certain cases some hidden ideas and impulses of a society cannot be revealed by other ways becomingly but the arts. However, in some cases the thoughts and ideas that are only individual expression of the inward world, so these artists cannot play such a role.

On the one hand, I agree with the assertion to some extent. Because both the arts and artists root from the society and they are necessarily influenced by the general thoughts and ideas of a society, in most cases their thoughts and ideas are relevant to the hidden ideas and impulses of a society. Through the works of the artists, the artists convey the hidden ideas and impulses to the world and the public. For example, consider Picasso' dove, a painting which was painted in the First World War. Through this painting, Picasso expressed a spirit of yeaning for peace and boring the war which is one of the most significant hidden ideas at that time. In areas of literature, consider the work of the Great Gatsby, a fiction written by Fitzgerald In this work which is based on the American dream that appeared after the First World War, the author try to convey one pulse that Americans were pursuing the American Dream. In short, in most cases, we can learn some hidden ideas and impulses of a society by studying the works of artists.

From another standpoint, I consider that in certain cases it is responsible for the artists to reveal the hidden ideas and impulses, since in some cases these hidden ideas and impulses are not fit to be expressed directly. In these circumstances, resorting to the arts is a better way to reveal the hidden ideas and impulses. For example, consider the development of China's history as an example. From Burning of books and burying of scholars in Qin Dynasty to literature persecution in Qing Dynasty, the emperor of almost each dynasty made a great effort to retrain the thoughts of the public in order to maintain the authority of his dynasty. What is the authentic reason for the rigorous behaviors of these emperors? I consider that some hidden ideas and impulses such as ideas of pursuing democracy, freedom and equity which might do harm to the authority of the emperors are revealed by the ancient scholars and public. From the rigorous behaviors of these emperors we can realize the effectiveness of artists in revealing the hidden ideas and impulses of a society. In short, in such cases, the artists are an effective way to reveal the hidden ideas and impulses.

However, on the other hand, every artist is an individual; their unique thoughts are expressed by their works such as paintings, music. In certain cases, their thoughts are irrelevant to the society, let alone the hidden ideas and impulses, and instead their artists are only the reflection of their inward world. For example, consider Van Gogh' painting, the Starry Night. What does this painting reflect? I consider that Van Gogh, through this painting, expressed his love of life and the pleasure from the wonderful world. All of these personnel feelings are irrelevant to the hidden ideas and impulses of the society. For another example, in realm of music, many popular singers express their personnel opinion of love, ethic, friendship which also has nothing to do with the hidden ideas and impulses of the society.

In sum, I agree with the assertion with reservation. I concede that in most cases it is the artists that reveal the hidden ideas and impulses of a society, and that in certain cases in which these hidden ideas and impulses are not fit to be expressed directly, resorting to the artists is an effective way. However, it is the artists who create the artists; consequently, in some cases the thoughts of the artists have nothing to do with the hidden ideas and impulses of a society in that the artists only express their inner feelings while do not consider that whether their thoughts are irrelevant to the hidden ideas and impulses.
