In our modern society, people are growingly concerned about how to improve the quality of education at college and university level. Some people hold the view that all faculty should be required to spent time working outside the academic world in their professions relevant to the courses they teach. From my perspective, this issue requires a case-by-case analysis, we cannot treat matters in an undiscriminating manner. Thus I strongly disagree with the topic. In fact this appeal depends primarily on the specific academic area, besides, there are lots of methods we can choose to improve the quality of education in universities.

Admittedly, some courses are tightly linked to the practical application, especially those courses about technologies which are developing from day to day. From working outside the academic world in professions relevant to their courses, teachers can better their comprehension about the cutting-edge technology and find out the differences between theories on book and actual work. In that case, when students participate in this teacher’s course, they are able to know which technology is outdated in actual work and which technology has the potential to become popular in the future and most of all, the current situation of their future vocation. These experiences which do not exist in the textbook are equally important for students in majors emphasizing practical operation. Students who major at software programming are persuasive examples. Some programming languages such as “C” we learned in school have already out of use in software industry. Knowing the current condition of software industry could help them get rid of being misguided and become more competitive when applying a job.

However, some courses like theoretical physic are not aiming at practical operation, they are focus on figuring out some academic problems. The ultimate objective for those students who participate in the course is mastering the basic knowledge on relevant scientific areas which are useful for them to devote themselves into further research after graduation. To some extent, practical working experiences are less useful to those students. Contrarily, faculty's working outside the academic world will not only waste their research time, but also reduce their communication time with students. For instance, Albert Einstein spent most of his life in mathematical calculation, his quantum theory and the theory of relativity made great contribution to human society. Without regard to Marie Curie’s long-time working in shabby room, new elements Po and Ra cannot be found. Both of their academic achievements have nothing to do with taking a job relevant to their research.

In addition, there are numerous ways for the schools to improve the quality of instruction. Turn our attention to students, the school should encourage students to form some sort of study groups. Students in one group can help each other with study, work on some academic puzzle collectively, and what is more, they could supervise each other to correct inert habit on study. At the same time, another good suggestion is that schools should provide more funds for students who want to take a part in researches about certain subjects. In this way, not only could the university or college elevate their academic reputation, but also could the quality of instruction be further improved. For instance, my school has held different kinds of competitions for students with different majors. In the competition, I learned how to use knowledge learned in my major to get others’ approval. Participating in a competition is indeed a way for students to enforce their knowledge come from classes.

In sum, whether to call on faculty to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach depends on the professors’ specific academic area. The most rational choice is making different teaching plans in term of different majors and adopting diverse methods rather than one way to improve the quality of instruction. In that case, students in universities and colleges can have a better cultivation and become more competitive when they step into the society.
