Issue 103
"The study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives."
The speaker alleges that only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives can the study of history has value. I am fundamentally for this assertion, nonetheless, the speaker overlooks the fact that we can get wisdom from history study, and it is a promotion to our future life when we study history.
The history which has a close relevance to our every day life is undoubtedly deserved to study. As we know, history, which is life of the past, always related to daily life of today, and make a great difference on modern person. For instance, penicillin is a vital medicine since it has been discovered by Sir Alexander Fleming in 1928. During World War Two, penicillin, which is the most widely used antibiotic, saved many lives. Since then, penicillin was regarded as a miracle, and it still play a big part in our daily life. With the study penicillin and its history, it has been improved by generations, and it is still a extensively applicable antibiotic. Without study of penicillin and its history, it would be a worse circumstance for us today.
Admittedly, the speaker’s statement has merit, yet what we can learn from our ancestors is just as critical. During thousands of year, we have plenty of sages such as Confucius and Socrates whose wisdom is still sparkle in our day, though their times are far from ours. Their philosophy as well as some mottos, fit comfortably to their background, which seems to be too tedious and outdated for us, can also conduct us..For example, there exists an old saying in China: “Honest suggestions go against your ear while good medicine tastes bitters”. When we make friends or adopt suggestions, we always obey this rule. Moreover, Confucius’s intelligence affect the Chinese generation by generation, no matter ages, adults, adolesents, or children, all assorted in his books and speeches. Thus, we learn history to acquire knowledge and experience.
In addition, “The past, like a mirro, can reflect the future”. To study history is to prepare for the future. We can avoid mistakes which appeared in the history; We do things right by studying things has happened in the history.
All in all, it is no doubt that we have to study history that is relevant to our daily lives, however, it is not adequate. History would teach us a lot. To learn experience, wisdom, and even fault are also essential. Therefore, we must study history in all respect. |
