The best way to understand the character of society is to examine the character of the men and women that the society chooses as its heroes or heroines.

The character of society is the description of the common attitude and ideology of all the social people, which conceives a profound and sophisticated complexity. The heroes or heroines generally display supernormal courage and perseverance in the face of danger, as well as the will for self sacrifice and make achievements for all the other people thus win everyone’s veneration and worship. The character of heroes and heroines would be some degree of representative of the social character in most time, but considering the complication of society, I cannot completely agree with the speaker that the individual character of heroes or heroines can cover the overall social characters’ connotation.

First, the history of progress that an individual becomes a hero or a heroine is also a progress of the people fight for their rights, and the reflection of the conflicts and struggles of the society or a social class in that era. In most circumstance, heroes or heroines are always the individuals who have courage, wisdom beyond average people and desire to sacrifice for serving the public, and they lead or represent the people to strive for the their common and basic rights, such as freedom and equality, therefore resolve the conflicts, fulfill the social expectation, and gain the respects and veneration from all the people benefited. In the first sense, generally by seeking to the legend of heroes or heroines we can have a further understanding about the typical character of the society that the heroes or heroines devoted to.

Conversely, after the accomplishments, the heroes or heroines virtually establish the moral consciousness of society which people delicate to pursuit for. In the second sense, it is the heroes or heroines who contribute to the formation of the character of society. History is always replete with examples. George Washington, who served as the first president of the United States of America, was regarded as the father of this country and made the greatest contribution to the independence of the USA. He never officially participated in any party sternly against partisanship, sectionalism, and any involvement in foreign wars; he reluctantly served the second term as a president and refused to be the third, which became a customary policy later and was obeyed by most later-presidents. Washington’s character of independence, full-hearted for citizens, peace has a profound influence on every Americans until to now.

However, there exists a limitation of the Heroes and Heroines on many aspects such as the size of the hierarchy they represent for and the scale of the influence of their achievements. Even never denying that their irreplaceable accomplishment can verify that they deserve to be heroes or heroines, we cannot understand the overall society only by examining the characters of them after taking into account the complexity and multi-class property of society. For example, Martin Luther King Jr. is just the representative of fighting for the civil rights of the African American but not including the other racial class of America, and at that time the character of American society was also supporting peace and anti-war by the action of Kennedy on Cuba missile crisis.
