TOPIC: ISSUE88 - "Technologies not only influence but actually determine social customs and ethics."(Technology)
WORDS: 595

In this era with explosive technologies, our life has changed significantly and will continue changing. I agree with the speaker at the point of view that technologies influence social customs and ethnics profoundly and thoroughly. However, the speaker's opinion that technologies determine social customs and ethics goes too far.
To start with, the influence brought about by technologies is obvious. The quality of our life is enhanced, the pace of life becomes more and more rapid, the pressure of life becomes increasing tremendous and the customs we used to follow changed distinctly along with these change of our life owing to the development of technologies. For example, industry revolution liberates productivity of people and turns the form of human's job from hand-work to brain-work. This change makes it possible for women to afford a job in contemporary industry while in the past they used to leave at home and serve to their husband. The influence of women getting out the house and earning a life themselves is magnificent. It changed the custom that men are superior affront women and caused the request of equal treatment. For another example, long-distance communication tools are developed during the past decades that it is unnecessary for people to gather together when they need communication or discussion. This technology makes it possible for people to work at home or other place rather than the unique workplace.
Technologies also have influence on ethnics although they seem to be separated factors. In deed, the development of technology will change the comprehension for some issue and then cause the change on ethnics. For example, before the significant research result of genetics, people used to regard those marriages between relatives are favorable. However, the genetic research tells us that children generated within this type of marriage suffer a high level of some genetic disease and then the view toward this type of marriages changed a lot that people now view it as the result of unenlightening.
However, the speaker's assertion that technology could determine social customs and ethics goes too far. In fact, some of them are determined by human nature so that technology may make no sense to their change. For example, no matter how advanced technologies are, the loyalty to the country, the love to parents and children and the care and pity for unfortunate people will still occupy a place in our heart. Some of the social customs and ethics are pedestals of the society so that before the society is damaged, they will keep their existence. For example, monogamy is the fundamental restraint in current society. It seems that technologies mean little to the change of marriage form. These examples indicate that though technologies are powerful, they sometimes make little sense to social customs and ethics.
On the other hand, sometimes social customs and ethics determine or at least influence deeply the development of technologies. For example, owing to the fear of moral disaster, the development and research of clone suffer many restraints over the world. Although it could provide methods to cure some urgent disease, but the ethical controversy along with it threatens contemporary people so they restrict the research of clone in some conservative areas.
To sum up, I hope I had discussed this issue completely and deeply though it seems impossible for the lack of relevant experience and research. Generally speaking, I insist that technologies have influence on social customs and ethics but this influence is not sufficient to determine social customs and ethics. However, on the opposite, social customs and ethics also have influence on technologies and sometimes this influence seems determinative.
