TOPIC: ISSUE50 - "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."

Although the faculty , which worked outside the academic world in some areas, could improve their quality of instruction, it is not presume that this measure is suitable to all the academic fields and has its inner drawbacks. So I disagree the speaker's suggestion that all staff in the college and university should work outside the school.

Admittedly, in recent education system, our educators overemphasize the basic theories that are too obscure to fail to give a direct visualization to our students. Moreover, the opportunities to practice in the company outside the school is so rare that most of the students have to face this dilemma that they will be hard to find a job after their graduated. If the faculty which orientation on the field that requires much practice should be encouraged to work in a company related to their profession. It has two merits for the faculty to do so: Firstly, the faculty can grasp the essence of the theories after they applied these into real world. Therefore, these faculty could instruct students in class with a vivid and clear way. It not only rouses the student's motivation about the unknown areas, but also leads to these students learn the boring theories in a easy way. Second, in the era of knowledge-explosion , the information about what the faculty teach is updated quickly. Our faculty can gain the immediate information when they work in the enterprise which is the reflection to the shift of the frontier technologies. It willbe helpful to the students to learn the latest knowledge.

However, the speaker presents a unilateral conclusion that "all" of the staff should work outside . In my observation, the practice outside is a useful way for some student to improve their ability such as the students which major in MBA that have a closely link to the realistic society, it is helpless in these areas which require a lot of logic reasoning like mathematics. Moreover, most of these practices are the time-consuming work. Without a scientific arrangement, the faculty may be trapped by the company's work so as to hardly concentrate on the teaching.Therefore, to free the faculty to burden task and form a more effective education system, the faculty have freedom to decide whether to work outside or not by their own situation.

Working for the company is a good way to enhance the quality of instruction areas to the extent that these fields need more practices, but the speaker's overlooks the influence that these practices outside will consume so much time of the faculty that they will reduce the teaching quality of these faculty, and that many areas require the faculty spend more time in the lab and make the researches in university rather than work outside to accumulate experience.So the speak's recommendation will not be accepted before take other factors into account.
