TOPIC: ISSUE157 - "There is no such thing as purely objective observation. All observation is subjective; it is always guided by the observer's expectations or desires."

Based on the observation of the famous sculpture Venus, will you think it beautiful or not? To different people, the answers would differ since different people have different notions about "beautiful" in their hearts. So is it with the observations of the other things that purely objective observations can hardly be achieved since different observers have different eyes and senses. However, it is unwise to say that there is nothing completely objective and all observations are subjective—because of the observer's expectations or desires.
It's undoubtedly that many of the observed results are not completely objective. Firstly, the observers always intend to observe the phenomenon with their intense desires and expectations. For example, in front of a suit of sedimental rock, with an intense desire that there would be some interesting fossils existing, you may possibly view a contaminant in the shape of a certain kind of animal as a real fossil. Besides, a person's ability of observation can also influence the results. For instance, face to a same piece of mono-colored painting, the normal person would see it as green, but to a person with color blindness, he may possibly see it as blue. But obviously, the color of the painting couldn't be both green and blue. In other words, the color-blind’s observation is not oubjective. Again, face to a same stone far away from the observers, the observer with a good eyesight may discern it as in a multiangular shape, but to the other observer with a poor eyesight, he may probably see it as a rounded one. That's to say, the observation is largely influenced by one's ability of observation. In addition, the results of the phenomenon can be influenced by the measurements we use to observe objects as well. Since we cannot observe the bacteria with naked eyes, we have to use a microscope to help us. However, we shouldn't draw the conclusion that there aren't bacteria existing if we don't use a microscope.
Though the observed results can hardly be objective because of the various factors mentioned above, we cannot ignore the objective results that indeed exist. Face to the mono-colored painting, though the two persons give different answers about its color, at least the fact that it is mono-colored is true and objective. Also, face to the same thin section, though the observer cannot discern the microbe in it without the help of a microscope, the fact that there indeed exist microbes since we can discover them with a microscope. In addition, if we can observe the objects with an attitude as more objective as possible, the results we obtain will be much more objective. To the same sedimental rock mentioned above, if it is a novice who observes it, the contaminant in the shape of an animal may not be discerned as a fossil, but may possibly be recorded as “an animal-like contaminant” objectively. Furthermore, one cannot resist that a comet is indeed arriving to our planet when you see a ray of light with a long tail sliding through the firmament and breaking the darkness. And no one can deny that the rabbit indeed runs faster than the tortoise since it uses less time to run through the same distance as the tortoise. If no objective observations exist, how could the referees determine who win the first place in the races? And how could the doctors determine whether a person catches a cold or not? All the judgements these people do are based on the objective observations that help them to make the appropriate decisions.
In sum, though objective results can hardly be obtained because of the various factors, we cannot ignore the objective facts that indeed exist due to the objective observing. Also, to make the observations more objective, the observers should get rid of the factors influenced by their subjectivities to the greatest extend. |
