TOPIC: ISSUE17 - "There are two types of laws: just and unjust. Every individual in a society has a responsibility to obey just laws and, even more importantly, to disobey and resist unjust laws."

According to the speaker's assertion, while we should obey the just law, we should also take the unjust law for grant, we should disobey it or even resist it. I
agree with the
former part of the speaker's assertion, because a just law is inherently worthwhile for us to obey, there are no reasons for us to disobey it. However, I strongly disagree that we have the responsibility to disobey and resist the so-called unjust laws, and I hold my opinion for the following three reason.
First of all, as Aristole, one of the most brilliant ancient Greek philosophers ,said, Law is order, and good law is good order. He pointed out that law is the foundation stone of the order and stability of a society. Consider, if we are allowed to break the laws freely, no matter they are supposed by us to be just or unjust, the seriousness and dignity of the laws will be no more. Just like the soldiers in the army should obey the disciplines, as citizens, we have the responsibility to obey the laws, or even protect it from being disobeyed. If a soldier disobey the disciplines, he will be punished and even be in dangerous in the war. If we don't obey the laws, we will also be punished, but what's more, we are putting our society into a chaos situation.
To say the least, if we really have the right to disobey and resist the unjust laws, then who have the right to make judgement that whether a particular law is just or unjust? As Thomas Jefferson said, no society can make a perpetual constitution, or even a perpetual law. That remind us that it is nearly impossible to make a law that satisfies all the people, all the time. In other words, different people have different views to a particular law. For example, some people suggest that abortion should be allowed, because women should have the freedom to dispose their own body. However, others, especially those who have strongly religious beliefs, disagree. They think that a baby, even it is not be given birth to yet, is a life, and it has the same right as a normal people. In their eyes, Abortion is no better than killing someone. Given above disputation, how can we judge a law about abortion is just or unjust? So, I don't think any of us have the right and ability to make judgement about the justice of a particular law, except under a few extreme conditions.
I can't deny that there are always some improper parts of the laws, because laws are made by human, and human will make mistakes, it is impossible for the legislature to take all conditions into consideration. However, even we really come across an "unjust" law, what we should do is not to disobey and resist it, because the behavior that to disobey and resist a law itself is also unjust. We should not be encouraged to take unjust measurement to against something unjust. The most suitable manner that we should take is to ask the legislatures for help, try to report then the improper parts of the law and suggest them to revise it. Even if the legislature take your suggestion for grant, there are still better ways for you than disobeying and resisting. For example, you can write down your opinion and send it to the mass media to publish, so that you can make
pressure on the legislatures. We are living in a democratic world, and we should believe that we can use a democratic way to express our opinion, and we believe that we can use a just way to make our world a better world, and that's the reasons for our today's prosperity.
In the final analysis, I want to once more underline that no matter we think the laws are just or unjust, as a modern citizen, not a man live in brute society, we should not be allowed to break the law freely. We have a lot of ways to express our dissatisfaction, but disobeying and resisting is definitely not the best one. |
