本次直播课的主要目的是帮助大家养成刷题、列提纲、选例子的习惯，争取做到每天花15分钟刷题，锻炼自己的思维能力、梳理和拓展自己的知识结构。  如果活动反响好，我们会尝试每月开展一次刷题活动。

本次活动重点关注以下4道托福作文真题

Essay topic 1


A city wants to help teachers of its high school students (age14-18)improve their teaching. It is considering two plans:
1. Choose a small group of excellent teachers; these teachers will attend a class led by an expert for additional training in how to teach effectively, and they will then come back to their schools and provide that training for other teachers in school.
2. Provide additional training in teaching effectively for high school teachers, using online material that each teacher will study individually.

Some universities require students to take courses in many subjects. Other universities require students to specialize in one subject. Which is better? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

Thesis statement:
It is advantageous for students to focus on only one subject rather than juggle numerous courses of various subjects.

Middle paragraph 1  
Point:
Balancing classes, tests, projects as well as extra-curricular activities is enough to make any college students feel overwhelmed, let alone coping with courses among different disciplines.

Information (examples):
Students majoring in computer science in Harvard University serve as a persuasive example. Not only do they have to frequently stay up whole nights to write codes, but also they have to take internships to find a well-paid and decent job, such as working in Google or Facebook, after graduation. With this crammed schedule, hardly can they allocate time to other disciplines.

正文：（直接完整写了一篇，用了40分钟）
Talking of the problem that who should decide the issues concerning about everyday life in the campus, I think choosing the experts to make this decision will be better. Although the students are more familiar with their own lives, the experts could consider this problem in an objective position. Besides, experts have more experiences to provide what the result of one specific decision will be.

Admittedly, students really know more details of the daily life than experts. Students live in the campus every day, so they can easily find the things that can make their lives inconvenient. The decisions of the students will easily make it more comfortable to live in the campus. For instance, students are the major users of the library. Only students know the complex tasks they have which are had to be done with the library every day, thus if they decide the open time of the library, no students will be bothered.

However, experts can objectively consider this problem. Experts don’t affect by any benefits of the decision, what they must do is just for the development of the university. As a result, they won’t give a decision that just has some superficial benefits. For example, most students can just want the foods that seem delicious but ignore whether they are healthy. So If the students make the decision, they may not consider about the nutrition of the food, which might lead to some health problems. Conversely, experts will decrease the number of junk food to keep the students healthy.

Moreover, the experiences of the experts can help them see the potential aftermaths. Generally, experts have helped many universities make this kind of issue. Consequently, they have seen the results of some decisions that seem good and won’t use them. Specifically, students may think that it is better for the time of closing the dormitory at night to be later, which will make the students more convenient to have fun outside at night, yet experts can have the experience that students will have a large possibility of suffering from safe problems if the dormitory closes too late.

To sum up, I agree that experts should decide the issues of students’ everyday lives. Students know accurately how they feel, but it is more significant that experts have a more objective position and more experiences.

Thesis statement: From my perspective, the first approach will be more effective since teaching is something you can only improve through practice rather than by acquiring some general principle and knowledge. More importantly, teachers, unlike studetns, are more willing to learn by discussions instead of merely accepting knowledge, which is the characteristic of online materials. Besides，off-line course can also help create an environment where teachers could communicate with each other, which could greatly stimulate their interest. From these considerations, the fisrt way is more appropriate for the high school to improve the teaching skill of teachers.


Middle paragraph 1
Point: Teaching, just like other practical skills, needs practice to hone.
Information (examples):From our experience as a student, we can find out the truth that there is not necessarily a link between erudite and good teaching skill. Rather, there are many teachers with sufficient professional knowledge who are unable to convey their ideas clearly or devise some effective way to communicate with the students. Some other teachers just can't figure out the complexity degree to which they should keep when explaining questons to the  high school students.
Elaboration: For these teachers, who already know all the knowledge and principles they should be equipped with to teach the high school students, what they need is of course not reading some materials and try to digest it by asking some questions online. Instead, what they need the most is to watch how other excellent teachers do in their classes, like how they construct their class structure on the basis of the high school students' mind level and how they stimulate the interest of students by utilizing some interactive games. And he can also benefit a lot by practicing it in classes and have other teachers or experts commenting on it. These approaches can all be adopted in an off-line courses, no matter it's the course held by the experts to some excellent teachers or by these outstanding teachers to the rest of teachers in the high school.

Middle paragraph 2Point: What's more, teachers as adults, may be more apt to accpet the way of discussing instead of just receiving knowledge, by which they could elaborate their confusions and find out the answers or find some new perspectives to their original answers.
Information: Admittedly, there are many teachers who are always ready to acquire new knowledge. But there are also a not small amount number of teachers who are rather confident about their own teaching skills and can't see the defects of it. So, an one-size-for-all model without first discussing with them and realizing the poossible flaws in their teaching practice would hardly be effetive. Besides, in an off-line class, teachers can always adjust their content according to the response of listeners, making the teaching a rather flexible process which can hardly be acheived through online teaching.
Elaboration: By better gearing the content of courses to the needs and present level of the listeners, these courses can achieve their purpose more effectively since it can best stimulate the listeners' interest and drive them to learn.

Middle paragraph 3:point: Besides adjusting the courses to the demand all the listeners, bringing all the teachers together is also a good way to arouse the curiosity of them since it can help creat a community where teachers could learn from each other.
Information:It's well-known that nowdays the education system is competition-oriented, not only for the students but also for the teaches. so most of the teachers won't have the chance to communicate with each other about improving teaching skills when at school as they are competing with each other for promotion. This could do great harm to the teaching improvement of the school as a whole, since it precludes the information exchange between teachers. But attending courses together will creat an environment where listeners need to exchange ideas, which can definitely help teacher to reflect on their own teaching practice and accelerate the generation of novel ideas and approaches in the teaching process.

A lot of high school students now cheat in homework assignments, by asking other students for answers. Which of the following do you think is the most efficient way to stop?
-asking parents to help stop the students from cheating

-asking teacher to create homework assignment that cannot be easily cheated

Thesis statement:
Asking parents to help or penalty and punishment to the students would not achieve the goal that stop students cheat in their homework, and the most efficient and effective way is asking teacher to create assignment that cannot be easily cheated.

Middle paragraph 1
Point: Asking parents to help students from cheating and punish them will works in a certain extent. However, it might backfire and bringing bad influence.
Information (examples):  In adolescent, teenagers always have a rebellious behavior and parents' preachy and punishment will make them cheat more seriously.
Elaboration: In a recent research, nearly 2/3 students admit that they don't want to listen to parents' preach, even though they know they are wrong. As for penalty and punishment, is definitely the worst way to teach students. It will harm not only their physical health, but also mental health, even leaving a life time long influence in their heart.

Middle paragraph 2   
Point: Require teacher to create homework assignment that cannot be easily cheated will solve the problem at its source.
Information (examples):  Consider a symphony orchestra's experience, everyone focus on their own instrument, like someone playing piano, someone playing violin, thus they cannot cheated on their assignments.
Elaboration: If everyone's assignments are different, students cannot copy from others and cheated on homework can be avoided.

Thesis statement: From my perspective, of course, the latter plan is obviously better than the former with its unique characteristic of being unrestrained and being limitless in many aspects.

Middle paragraph 1
Point:Based on the busy routine of high school teachers, the bulky of them hardly can find it suitable to attend a lecture and promise any practical effect of understand what has been displayed on from the trained teachers which in other words can be thought to be inflexible. (state the main point in response to the essay topic)

Information (examples): Many high school teachers are always so busy during their diurnal work as they need  to be prepared for the lecture and show in a classroom in a specific time, as a result of which many teachers may be giving the class while the training program is being going. When a teacher feels so tired or fraught with the work, he or she scarce have the extra energy to focus on the training and couldn't benefit any thing from it.

Elaboration: The normal routine in a school is somewhat fixed which means a great cost has to be made for the training program, a kind of cost that may overwhelms the expected effect or may just contradict the training program which is likely to last a long period.

Taking various courses can be beneficial to most students while specialising in one main subject may pose a treat to their future career prospects.

Point:
Adopting a multiple education is an ideal way for students to widen their knowledge fileds as well as broarden their horizon.
Information:
It is of great importance for students to understand the rules of current politics and economy in order to fit their social roles. Knowing what happened in the past and where to stand in the future is indispensible during such processes.
Elaboration:
Due to the guide function of education, it is advantageous for students to take courses in some different subjects.


Middle paragraph 2
Point:
Although focusing on one subject is a good way for students to dig deeply in this specific field, it is likely to undermine the various possibilities of students' future occupaion.
Information:
It can be hard sometimes to find an appropriate job in the labor market, which means those students who just received one subject education might lose their competitive advantages although they are professional in their own fields.
Elaboration:
Employers tend to hire applicants who have various skills and multiple backgrounds, which is a current trend in the workplace.

Point: Experts have the ability to manage daily issues concerning everyone on campus from a global perspective while students do not.
Information:
Students may bolster the proposal of prolonging the opening hours while experts may oppose it. Although students can stay at the school library for a longer time, extended opening hours of the library require additional cost. Since the budget of a university is limited, additional cost may cause a deficit budget or may lead to a decrease of budget in other areas.  
Elaboration:
Students tend to make decisions for the sake of their personal interests instead of the development and management of their university. In other words, students are prone to think in a subjective way. In contrast, experts will make determinations from a global perspective, which means when they make out a plan, they will take various factors into consideration.

Point: Result is so huge that student would not easy to try
Information (examples): In some university, cheating in homework will exert positive effect in their overall grade, even make them cannot graduate from university
Elaboration: Some university maintain that cheating is a critical problem about person quality, so serious penalty is necessary. Facing with such enormous punishment, many students will feel so afraid that not to cheat.

Point: Serious punishment is good to become an active environment.
Information (examples): Excellent atmosphere is important to students’ behavior. In many top college, those student would not cheat because there are almost no people to cheat. If someone is cheating, some classmates maybe report him to professor.
Elaboration: Atmosphere effect person. When they live in a hardworking university, they will do something like their classmate. They will try their best to complete their homework instead of cheating.

From my own prospective, I prefer the later plan that every teacher utilizes the Internet to absorb the additional training individually.

Middle paragraph 1 (adopt the PIE model to plan your middle paragraph)  
Point: (state the main point in response to the essay topic)
Since different teachers from heterogeneous high school have various teaching qualities, it is implausible to training them without supervising from some experts and interactions of questioning and answering.

Information (examples): (describe the example(s) you plan to use as information to support the point)
Image that we have one thousand teachers needing training, but at first, only a small part of them can be trained by an expert. It is unconvincing that these would be a good supervisor to train other untrained ones though they assimilate the training efficiently. These excellent teachers might not go through the same difficulties that other teachers have experienced, which would result in an embarrassing situation where the training will have no effect on improving the overall teaching quality.

Elaboration: (state the value principle you would refer to for elaborating the point and the information)

In high school, teachers take up the heavy responsibility for enhancing their students’ score, so it is incredible to abstract their working time to attend a special class. Point:
Teachers are the frontline of education, who are easily clear about the performance of student's cheating. This experience can help teachers to investigate the homework system that cannot be easily cheated.
Information (examples):
The homework is collected by the teachers, and from comparing the assignments of each students, teachers can identify the group that their homework assignments have similarities.
Elaboration:

Middle paragraph 2  
Point:
Teachers are the experts to deal the problem of students’ study, because they have obtained at least the bachelor degree in the university for education and undertaken the professional training to be a good teacher. The knowledge they obtained can find the key point to improve the homework system.
Information (examples):
The education psychology is the required course for the teacher, which gives the methods to analyze the students’ activities, and the solutions to handle the potential problems in the students’ mind.
Elaboration:
Teachers can use this knowledge to analyze the behavior of cheating by the students and use the theory in the homework system that cannot be easily cheated.

Middle paragraph 3  
Point:
Admittedly, the punishment and parent’s help can facilitate the process of homework system innovated by teachers.
Information (examples):
Parent are the supervisor for student doing homework at home, which can sign their name in the homework assignment to tell the teacher the work is done by their children alone. The punishment add a coat to homework system to keep it powerful and compulsory for students to observe the rule of homework assignment.

Essay topic:

Thesis statement: Expert are more suitable for issue decision making. Students should not involve, since decisions they might make affect everyone in the campus, not only themselves.

Middle paragraph 1
point: Students are not mature enough to make big decisions, however experts are specialized.
Information (examples): Students haven't experienced life in the real grand society. They don't have to work, thus don't know how their decisions may do to others' life. For example, they only take classes rather than arranging classes. Teachers life may be a mess if students change their classes as they like. Students are less likely to make proper decisions satisfying other majorities. Experts can do researches to find the possibly most reasonable way so that can deal with the complicated issues in the campus.
Elaboration: Life experience and knowledge are vital when making big decisions.

Middle paragraph 2
point: Students should focus on studying rather than being engaged in some trivial affairs.
Information (examples): Students may be exhausted if they have to consider school issues aside from their studying. Imaging that every student has a different opinion about college issues, it's rather hard to plan as a whole. The student representative may not know how to satisfy most students' preference. He may have to sacrifice his personal studying time to deal with school works. On the contrary, experts have studied about issue planning, they can manage it much more effectively.
Elaboration: Everyone has limited energy. Studying requires concentration.

Among all three ways, I recommend Penalty or Punishment to be the most efficient way to stop high school students cheating since compared with the others, it's the fastest way, the most deterrent way and it'll influence profoundly for the longest time.The schools could make strict rules to elaborate their penalty once they cheat and also execute strictly observing the rules.

Point:
Penalty or punishment is the fastest way to stop high school students cheating because it will spread widely, fastly and influence their behaviors profoundly for the longest time.
Information (examples):
For crime, we have laws and regulations regulating the penalty, so most people will remember there is a line we won't step in to stay away from the penalty. The warning effects are the fastest and widest.
Elaboration:
As long as the strict rules are made, students may hesitate to do cheatings. Until there is a student who is caught cheating and afford the huge price, soon the others will recognize the seriousness of the rules.

Point
Penalty or punishment influence students behaviors profoundly for the longest time.
Information (examples):
Besides, cheating is a wrong action, and anyone who made a mistake should take the responsibility of it.
The possible penalty warns them to know that they should stay away from any wrongdoings.
Elaboration:
Even though we ask the teachers to arrange not easily-cheating homework or ask parents to help stop their cheating, students will still have no idea about how terribly the action is. When they leave the situation we build for them, like entering into the college, they may begin cheating again.

This way every teacher is provided with the material they could utilize whenever or wherever convenient. Teachers could make the best use of their empty hours in their office, or home, or coffee shops. Entitled to this liberty, they are probably to gain related knowledge more efficiently comparing to the first plan, which requires them to be trained together by other teachers. Different teachers have different schedules. It takes some discussion, even concession to gather a group of teachers in a certain place and keep them for hours of training.  
Elaboration: (state the value principle you would refer to for elaborating the point and the information)  
Therefore, it is preferable to train teachers online, allowing teachers to control the training pace themselves, saving the time and energy wasted otherwise, and increasing the efficiency of teacher training.

Point:Taking courses in different courses can help students to cultivate comprehensive abilities. Information (examples):Nowadays, more and more jods need combination of many knowledge, and company who would like to hire prefers students who have knowledge in different fields. For example, an analyst in an investment bank is required to master knowledge in math, business and programming.
Elaboration: So it is a advantage for a students who takes courses in many subjects including math, business and programming to get this job easily after graduation and to get used to working content quickly.

Middle paragraph 1
Point:Students who take courses in many subjects are easily to find their true interest.
Information (examples):For example, a student chose the most popular major Finance at that time after high school graduation, he was not sure whether he was really interested in Finance or not because he had nothing to know with this subject. He found that he disliked Finance and took many elective courses in universities, and one of the elective courses was Japanese. He really liked Japanese and found his interest was teaching Japanese and wanted to be a Japanese teacher after graduation.
Elaboration: So if this student does not take many courses to find his actual interest, it might be difficult for the student to make his dreaming career planning.

Point:Although it is better for student to take courses in many courses, students who want to be a specialist should take more courses in one field than others. Since he has to learn deeply, it is not pratical for a student to be an expert if he spends much time in different course and everyone of them occupies only a little of time.

In summary, it is better for students to take courses in many courses to catch up the requirement of jobs nowadays and find their own actual interest, but if a student watnts to be an expert in one field, he has to spend much time to take courses in one subjects.

Creating the assignments that can make students realized that there is no any shortcut, like plagiarizing other’s works, to finish their job. (state the main point in response to the essay topic)

When the work is easy to cheat, students tend to  procrastinate, and when the deadline coming, the only way they can finish is to cheat.
Elaboration: To have some deeper reasoning and use some small examples.

Point: Create assignment that can raise their interests, therefore help them active learning.
Information (examples):
Homework assignments can be too laborious to students.
Students’ cheating is because they unwilling to meditate the assignments by themselves, in this case, they are always passive learning.

Reason1：One of the major causes of the problem is that teachers can hardly figure out whether students have cheated or not.
问题的主要原因之一是作弊难以被老师识别。
Support1:客观题的答案都是一样的。像作文之类的作业通常不会有人抄。

Reason2：Some students cheat because they do not attach great importance to that kind of homework assignment, which is dreary and repetitive.
一些学生抄作业是因为他们不认为这些重复性的枯燥作业很重要。

If I were the decision maker to choose a way for local high school teachers to improve their teaching, I will choose to gather a small group of extraordinary teachers to attend a class first, instead of all the teachers taking online class individually.

Admittedly, it is our obligation to offer every teacher the equal rights and opportunities to improve their teaching. No matter how long they have been a teacher, no matter how talent they are in teaching students, no matter how negligible they are in their social circles, they have the identical chances to get the access to become better entities.

Additionally, we need to realize the difference of the study abilities of local teachers to process our project more effectively. 上网课就像是开了一个大班，学的慢的老师会不好意思向周围寻求帮助，个体学习进度会差异很大，有的老师以为自己学会了，但是一和其他人讨论，就发现自己对问题理解得不深。所以开一个小班，大家面对面相互交流会更有利于有效的消化问题，也能对问题理解得很深入。

What’s more, if we collect our teachers from a lot of different schools, those teachers themselves may be wonderful resources for improving teaching to each other. Believe that there would come many innovative ideas.

In conclusion, I suggest that we should choose to cultivate a group of teachers from different schools, then those teachers come back to their own school to spread out what they learn in that temporary class.

As a university student, I would like a university that requires students to take courses in many subjects instead of that require students to specialize in one subject.

Admittedly, the more courses we take in a specialize area, the more knowledge we will acquire in the area, which would contribute to a number of students becoming experts in the area.

However, it seems impractical for most of students to keep a constant interest in a specialize area, so, if any, students should be given to the right to take courses different from the most of courses that they learned before. 学生们在大学里会接触到很多以前没有遇到的新事物，新鲜事，新的领域。他们的想法，兴趣爱好，特长会与以前有很大不同。他们也许会遇到他们更加擅长的事情，更加感兴趣的事情，更愿意花时间去了解的新事物。也许有的并不会对以后的career有帮助，但是他们想去做。Then they should be allowed to make what they desire into reality.

What’s more, not everyone is luck enough to meet with or know their favorite subjects or research directions in the very first beginning. Some universities require students to study many subjects while some other universities only require students to major in one subject.From my perspective, I agree to the former one. Universities always provide a platform for students to learn general knowledge instead of limit students’s mind by only one subject.

I have to admit that, major in only one subject not only release some students’s pressure for learning too much but also help students specialize their majors in a deeper understanding. For example, students major in computer science have to lean only one subject “Programming Design and Realize” which can help them with a more familiar operation in programming than those have to learn more subjects.••••

But if universities do that, students can only insist their speciality all the time and they will never have chance to learn about other fields, one of which may be the true enjoyment for students. For example,a student who major in computer science because he/she didn’t know whether he/she would enjoy his/her speciality during college time, but if he/she meet the chance for learning music,he/she would fall in love music and enjoy studying music,finally he/she becomes a famous musician. In a word, universities should provide more chances for students like requiring students to take course in many subjects, ••••

But at some universities, experts are hired to make this decision, students almost never involved. Which approach do you prefer and why?

Thesis statement:
As students play the role of learners as well as users, in order to make decisions more effectively and democratically, I favor the approach that students engage in the decision making of the issues that affect everyone's daily life on campus.

Middle paragraph 1
Point:
Students are the users on campus, so it's better for them to decide how to deal with the issues that affect their daily life with teachers and experts.
Information (examples):
Consider there is a plan to renovate the pavilion for students activities, it's apparently better that students participate in the renovation plan with teachers than teachers decide how to renovate it alone.
Elaboration:
Because during the process that students working with teachers together to make the plan, they will gain a precious experience of learning citizenship skills. As it might arise controversies between students and teachers over some specific needs, such as how to maximize the utility value of the pavilion under the minimum cost of the budget, students will figure out the way to deal with it properly when they engage in the decision making by making public opinion surveys on campus and then presenting the needs of surveys which are reasonable and even inevident to teachers and managers at the university.

1 Experts, like professional politicians, are full-time and informed decision makers. Experts have more specialized knowledge and analytic skills on the issues.

2 The experts, thinking for the benefits of the whole campus and balancing the stake of all parties, can make more objective, just and visionary decisions than the students that may be selfish and myopic. Of course, experts should be ensured that to make decisions based on the common good.

3 Some people may argue that opportunities should be utilized for students to engage in democratic processes. However, this democratic process across the whole campus can be costly and inefficient.

P:Taking many subjects will be better for they will have a better understanding of the world in a more interactive view.
I:They can learn and practice different skills in different subjects. Example: Math-Calclbtion, mathematic analysis skill. Lecture-reading and comprehensive skill..  (identify, more specific, connect taking courses and skills development. 例子要具体比如Solving eco problems in the subject--mathematic analysis
E: Through these skills, they can try to transfer their skills in different subject, and have the interactive view and critical thinking towards an idea.

Elaboration (valued principle):
During the process of students making decision, students’ citizenship skills and awareness are encouraged and cultivated. Additionally, when it comes to solve some perplex problems, students need to figure out how to find key issues before making final rationale plan. Therefore, students’ involvement in making decisions can provide a valuable opportunity to exercise their abilities of logistic and rational thinking.
