TOPIC: ISSUE131 - "The arts (painting, music, literature, etc.) reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society."
WORDS: 520 TIME: 01:30:00 DATE: 2010-4-12 19:59:23
The speaker claims that the arts reveal the hidden ideas and impulses of a society, I fundamentally agree with the statement insofar as some arts indeed illustrate the hidden ideas and the impulses, some other arts nevertheless are merely the reflection of the artists' own opinion.
Turning first to the creation process of some artists, we can easily conclude that some of the works of art are the result of the creative urge, they embrace the individual feeling and ideas of the artists, or the internal movement of the artists, just like some modern paintings involve the psychological activity of an autistic painter rather than the hidden ideas and impulses of a society. moreover, some works of art are brought to the society not for the manifest of the hidden ideas and impulse but for the demand or desire of some special idividuals, a case to this point is the Fallingwater, a exquisite villa built above a stream in the forest of Pittsburgh, which combines the nature and modren building aptly and properly, and was described as one of the most famous morden buliding of the world. However, the original intention of designing this constraction is to bulid a weekend villa for a owner of a shopping mall. It has no concern with revealing the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of the society.
However, some arts indeed demonstrate the hidden ideas and impulses of the society. Accroding to some works of some artists who hold the intense desire to regard revealing the social reality as their own resposiblilty, we consistently apperceive the compassionate expression for the lower classes, and the biting satire for the unfairness of the society, for example, Oliver Twister, written by Charles Dickens who is honored as a critical realism writer, actually concerns proverty prominently and reveals the evil respects of the inner of human being and the seamy side of the society. Another example for supporting this point is the great painting La Liberte Guidant Le Peuple, created by Eugene Delacroix in 1830 in honor of the July Revolution happened in the same year. the painting manifests this heroic sence for us and reveal the impulses of the society-- the progressing step of the people.
In addition, arts will help people be aware of the problems and contradiction existed in the society, because the function of some arts reflect the inner emotion of most people or cast shocking impact into people's heart. Some photographs from the front line of a battle always cause the anti-war sentiments of pacificists; and the music about the theme of caring about the starving children in africa--We Are The World, strikes a sympathetic resonance in the heart and mind of everyone. Arts such like those above deeply reveal and evoke the true feeling from the botton of our hearts.
In conclusion, not all the art can reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society ,wether it can obtian this function depends on the themes the artists desire to express, the background when it was created, and the ture influence of it to the society. |
