Some people believe that government funding of the arts is necessary to ensure that the arts can flourish and be available to all people. Others believe that government funding of the arts threatens the integrity of the arts.
As the concerned above, two main points has been listed, that some people advocate the government to found on arts for its development and other people believe that government funding will destroy the integrity of arts. While I admit that government funding can bring some bad effects, it may be more important for the role that government funding has played as to promote cultural communication. My assertion about this issue, discussed as below.
To begin with, we should admit that the objectors’ opinion have their own merits. After all, art is a deliberate recreation of a new and special reality that spring from one’s life experience and the true feeling of heart. While for the scientific and technological progress in modern times, the art has gradually evolved two types, natural art and the art for commercial objectives. When government make decisions to fund which art they may first consider that whether this art will bring good social benefits or whether the theme of the arts are fit well with its political objective. And so artists for gaining more government funding may change or even abandon some of their artists sense to please the government, then some natural arts may lose their lives during this economical times. In short, to some extent government funding can destroy the integrity of arts.
However, in the long term the advantages are far more influence than the bad effects as the other peoples have claimed that art depend on government. There are several reasons for this point. First of all, government founding on building museum or repairing historical relics can benefit for all people. As people are more satisfied with material life, this measure can help people better understand history and improve the quality of their spiritual life. Take the Palace Museum, one of the most famous museums in China, for example. Since twenty-four emperors lived and ruled from this palace during the past 500-year span, it has become the mirror of Chinese history and the development of new China. So it is the obligation of government to spend money on repairing the Palace Museum to maintain our precious historical culture for Chinese offspring.
On the other hand, by government founding of the arts can bring more economical interests and more chance of getting jobs for its people. Such as, architecture has gradually becomes a form of art because now buildings are not only designed for its functions but also for improving the cities appearance. Cities with good figures can attract more commercial investment and make wider development of its travel industry, thus more governments provide money on city buildings.
In conclusion, though government funding the arts may bring artists to the direction of gaining more economical interests, a artist who truly love art can not abandon his or her own pursuing and by his or her talent he or she may acquire more wealth instead of depending on government funding. On the other hand, government funding of the arts can bring lots of benefits for spread historical culture and promoting city development. |
