TOPIC: ISSUE51 - "Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student."
WORDS: 755 TIME: 0:44:53 DATE: 2006-7-15
There exists a hotter and hotter issue as to whether education would prove to be truly effective by means of being specifically deigned to meet the individual needs and interests of each student.Indeed,I consider interest as a main contributor to students' success in a specific field and propose that when educating students, instructors should take it into account. But at the same time, too much emphasis on the importance of interest and individual needs will provoke some problems in the process of education.
Firstly,It is widely acknowledged that interest, regarded to be the best teacher in one's learning process, functions as the stimulus in digging out students' specific gift as well as encouraging students in overcoming whatever obstacles they meet in the process of acquiring knowledge.History is replete with examples in different fields that can illustrate the giant power of interests. One need look no futher than one of the greatest,if not the greatest musician and composer in the music development,Beethoven. Astonishingly,he created his most famous music, the well-know Chorus, with completely deafness. Then how did he do this?It is the crazy love and interest toward music that supports him not only in sparkling shining ideas but also in challenging his doomed fate.In today's contemporary society, there are also many talents who can not bear the great loads of studying and transform to the fields they are gifted in.No example than Bill Gates can better illustrate this.Consider,if he hadn's given up classes in Harvard and set up his own business in the realm of computer, can he achieve the same great success in some subjects he considers to be boring. From these come the realization that everyone has a potential in a certain field and only by bending oneself in whatever attracts him most can he get some rewarding experience as well as enjoy the happiness of success.
Given the great power of interests in the process of education,to teach students and evaluate them under the completely same standard will not only impede them on the road to success but also cause some serious problems.Today's more competative world has put a heavy burden in students' shoulder. They must gain the high social status by gaining knowledge and assuming some social responsibility. However, learning without the power of interest can be totally exhausted and make students' frustrated to deal with the large amount of work their teachers have assigned them to do.The problem such as plagiarism might evaporate from this kind of dislike or even hatred toward learning. In order to turn in the paper in which field the students' haven't mastered very well due to their dislike of them, they have to paraphase from other sources. These small behaviors may form into habit, transforming the students into a totally dishonest citizen and even persons who will carry out some illegal deeds. Some more serious and striking problems such as hurting teachers,self-destuction and even suicide might also appeare if the form of education remains too solid. These possibilities all occure to warn the stuff of education to take measures to change the traditional system of education.
However,it is impossible for education to meet everyone's needs,at least to some extent. There're two main points for my illustration.Firstly, applying different ways and materials to every different student means a need of a large number of teachers, great sum of money spent on education and some other subjective prerequisite for doing so.This is impossible in today's world especially in some relatively poor contries. What the teachers can do is only to try themselves to design the classes as to satisfy the majority of students,if not all ,instead of making the class boring for all students.Secondly, students, especially some young ones, haven't got the ability to distinguish what they have skills and interests in.In this case, some fundamentally designed subjects, say, the basic compulsory subjects, fuctions not only in shaping the students' primary value system so as to figure out who they want to become but also equip them with some required abilities when they step into the real society.Amoung this subjects,Maths serves as enhancing students' ability of logical thinking, language fuctions as the fundamental tool for communication, liberal arts teach students how to read, write, speak intelligently as well as becoming a well-rounded person with the ability to appreciating beaty in everyday life. The importance of these classes may be preluded if too much emphasis has been put in individual interests.
In sum, given the significance of interest, truely effective education should try to design some measures in order to meet the majority's demand.Nevertheless,we shouldn't put overdue priority to different needs of different people due to some subjective reasons as well as its potentially bad effects.Education should strike a happy balance as to fully develop students. |
