What does it mean that more and more scandals are easily to be revealed? Maybe someone in those fields would think the exposure of scandals might diminish the reputation of individual or individual-alike, and even the certain field in the whole. However, I agree with the author's view that the scandals can be useful in focusing our attention to the deficiency of certain areas, and further more, scandals could alert the other to restrict themselves.
It's true that too much attention on scandals without just evaluating the contribution would diminish the reputation unfairly. After all, no one is perfect, and the public should allow individuals to make mistakes. Otherwise, the individuals might be embarrassed and no one would be unwilling to make efforts to contribute to certain professionals.
For example, scandals concerning the health care in China are always provoking the public, and lead to that the most patients choose not to believe the doctors anymore. As a result, the first-time reaction of the patients and their families towards the failure during medicating, especially the methods are risking, is to blame the doctors. Now few doctors are willing to take risk to try new methods that might cure the patience when other conventional means could not help. On the contrary, they are inclined to act with too much caution. Thus, the media should not focus too much attention on scandals otherwise development in certain fields might be stagnated.
However, scandals keep the public aware of the problems that the speaker or reformer would never, or could never realize of and tell the truth about. After all, individuals are more inclined to avoid blames and blow of others and they might try to mask the problems. Also, deficiencies in certain system such as the structure of government could be hard to find until scandals. For instance, the scandals regarding the fields of economics, such as sudden bankruptcy of companies which have just been thought to be extremely profitable would reveal the flaws in accounting principles. Thus being a form of mistake, the scandals could play the role of signal of the problems in certain fields.
What's more, scandals that being exposed by media might warn the later to restrict themselves. Individuals might not take the regulation and rules regarding certain fields serious until scandals are known by public. It might be apt illustrated by the example in which one graduator forged data which was in need to prove a theory regarding solid-state physics. He received admiration from even the authority of this field until experiments conducted by others proved that his data was doubtful. This event was such a shock that this scientist had to leave this field, because no one would trust him any more. Then later scholars would never try to cheat even when they have deduced the result without any doubt and the real data they get is absurd.
In sum, though the media and public should hold just attitude towards certain objection, it could not compose an excuse to mask the facts and problems to avoid and ignore scandals. |
