I don't think you have realized the importance of English writing skills in the field of science and technology. From your comments in point one, I am surprised that after two years in Canada you still judge the sophistication of a sentence by the number of lines and/or the number of clauses.
Writing is a mean of communication, not showing off the depth of your vocabulary or how long you can make your sentences. Sometimes a simple sentence can be just effective as those long running sentences
People in science and engineering sometimes underestimate the importance of English writing skills. I was once like that too, thinking English writing is not too important as long as others know what I'm saying, until my supervisor gave me some really well written pieces from the 80's and 90's. It really makes a huge difference.
My point is, it doesn't matter whether you are doing a MA, MSc, MASc, MENG or even a PhD (I guess really it should be "especially" if you are doing a PhD), English writing skills should be the focus of your study. |
