China Gazetteer Project Attention The position will be open till July 10.
Admission to the Autumn Research Program of the China Gazetteer Project at Harvard University takes place on an annual basis for the programs starting in September of the respective year. The online application opens on April 05. Application deadline is July 10. You need to apply in due time and form for our program. Please read the following information carefully, since incomplete applications have to be excluded from the selection procedure.
Background:
The China Gazetteer Project, led by Professor Richard B. Freeman, the Herbert Ascherman Chair of Economics at Harvard University, is digitalizing Chinese local-county-level and city-level gazetteers and creating a socioeconomic database that will be updated yearly for researchers on Chinese studies. This pioneering project will create a big data set with 2,000 counties/cities, 65 years and 120 variables each. Team members combine professors and Ph.D. candidates from Harvard and MIT, applying and developing their skills and talents to study Chinese Economy.
The vision of this project is to build a platform so that students, faculty and researchers can collaborate on the platform to achieves great goals in research world, especially focusing on China-related issues. This project started in January 2015 with Prof. Richard B. Freeman and has made huge progress. The expected time scope of this project is around 4 years. Our research topics concentrate in empirical (data-driven) questions with rigorous quantitative methods (in mathematical or statistical models). Also, we are willing to help talents to proceed both in academia or in their career paths.
We are looking for highly skilled and motivated visiting researchers to conduct research together. The application is open from April 05, 2016.
Application Requirements:
1. Enrolled in a 4-year university program or above (above second-year in a bachelor program) with a long-term interest in pursuing research in economics or finance. Background in economics and finance is a plus, but not necessary–candidates with strong technical backgrounds in other fields, such as computer science, mathematics, physics and statistics, are welcome to apply;
2. Have basic analytic and quantitative skills;
3. Proficient in programming skills in Stata, R, Python, ArcGIS or Matlab is a plus.
4. An adequate knowledge of English, especially at level B2 CEFR demonstrated. e.g. by a score of 90 or higher for the internet based TOEFL test, by a score of 6.0 or higher for the IELTS or by a Bachelor degree from a study program taught in English.
5. Have strong organizational and communication skills, and the ability to work well independently and collaboratively in a team;
6. Stay at Harvard University for a period of at least 6 months from September 2016, 5 days per week.

Explanations:
(1) Please upload a current and complete curriculum vitae.
(2) Your cover letter should be no more than 1000 words, includimg two parts
a. Why you would like to apply for this position.
b. Provide examples that demonstrate your ability to perform the duties of the postion . You need to explain why you are qualified.
(3) Please upload your academic transcript of records, including names of courses and grades.
(4) There are various ways to prove your English proficiency, among them standadized language tests and Cambridge certificates. A TOEFL iBT score of at least 90 with at least 23 in the speaking section is the minimum requirement. IELTS in the academic format is also accepted. The minimum requirements for your IELTS score of the speaking section is 6.0.
We also accept other internationally recognized language certificate such as e.g. the Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE).
Test scores are not required if you received or will receive a degree from a study program taught entirely in English.

(5) Academic essay written by applicant, in English, max. 20 pages. - optional documents
(6) GRE / GMAT test scores are not required, however they are strongly recommended for all applicants. If you want to submit GRE or GMAT test scores, please make sure to upload them in your online application.
(7) Optional documents including:
• Additional documents proving academic achievements of the applicant
• Certificates and documents about stays abroad or work experience demonstrating the qualification and motivation of the applicant
• Grades of the University Entrance Qualification
• Extracurricular Activities relevant for application
Interview:
Shortly after the end of the application deadline you will receive an interview notification via email, if you are qualified for this position. You will start by completing a Skype interview in which you will be asked to provide information on your qualifications, current studies, statement of purpose to the project, foreign language skills, etc. The online interview helps us to decide whether you meet the requirements for the program you have chosen. At the end of the interview you can review your answers via email.
Please note:
We will provide the on-site team members with work space in our offices and the use of our office equipment. We will also provide you with a Harvard identification card, which will ensure you access to various university-wide resources, libraries and events. You can, with permission from the instructor, audit classes and participate in seminars and conferences. Outstanding performers can co-author papers with professors and Ph.D. candidates from Harvard and MIT.
As our on-site team members, you need to apply for B1/B2 visa. For institutional reasons, you will be required to manage your own living expenses while here at Harvard University. We encourage qualified applicants to apply for the scholarships from China Scholarship Council or your university. Materials needed to apply for scholarships and Visa will be provided.
