48."The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten." ☆☆☆

Are people who make the significant events and trends in history those famous few, or by the whole mass whose identities have long been forgotten? In my view, I tend to disagree with both sides of the speaker’s claim.

When it comes to the political arena, we would find that the commonalty have palyed a more critical role than well-known figures in siginificant historical revolutions. Draw a figure of sp
eech, the famous few-like meteors elapse with the lapse time-is exchanging all the time while the historical process-like a roaring train always keeps ahead, even showing no difference. Go a step further, this trends of historical developments are requirements of common people rather than momentary passions or inclinations of certain key individuals-that actually served as important cataslysts or advocators for those significant social changes in history. For example, when studying “Anti-Slavery movement” during the American Civil War, Lincoln’s name appeals more preponderate than the Blacks organization mainly because he was the President at that time who led the Union during the American Civil War and abolished slavery in 1863. In fact, Blacks were in the vanguard of the anti-slavery movement and propelled the revolution forward till victory. In contrast Lincoln was not an abolitionist and his main aim in the war was not to end slavery but to get the South back into the Union, and would do this even if it meant retaining slavery. He was in many ways what we would consider in modern terms a typical cautious liberal-a compromiser on serious moral issues, only moving on them when pushed by social movements. I concede that the significance of elites to progress of social demography is indelible. For instance, without the leadership of Mao Zedong, Chinese people may grope a longer time for liberty in the dark. But closer scrutiny tells us commonality was actually the driving force behind these accomplishments. When we admire contributions of the famous few ,it deserves addressing much more emphasis on the common people.

However, in considering the artistic field, whether the extraordinary masterpieces in our history attribute more to the few outstanding persons or to the forgottable masses should be addressed on a case-by-case basis. For example, one of the “Seven Wonders” in the world-the Great Wall-by far has been considered as crystallization of the wisdom of Chinese ancient groups of workers whose name have been forgotten, while Confucianism-that has influenced the Chinese society profoundly and occupied a dominant position in Chinese ideological content for thousands of years-is almotsly developed by Confucius alone and his disciples.Another typical example is Homer epic poet-“the Illiad and the Odyseey”,which later apprasied as two of the greatest works in Western literature. In fact, this collection of poems should owe as equal contributions to Homer’s embellishment and modulation as to progressive itinerant poets for generations who polished them.

Finally, when it comes to academics, it is true that remarkable and significant inventions or discoveries are nearly all attributed to brilliant individuals not the masses. To find examples one need look no further than Steven Hawking, who are shaping our future for his book “A Brief History of Time”. As one of the most influential scientists of the 20th century, he has been proclaimed “the finest mind alive”, “the greatest genius of the late 20th century”, and “Einstein's heir” for revealing the mysteries of the universe in a style that non-scientists can enjoy. If this cannot give ample support for my point, let us see another more persuaded  example:the Nobel Prize. The Nobel Prize is an international award given yearly since 1901 for the most influential achievements in Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature, Peace and Economic Sciences(added In 1968) in memory of Alfred Nobel, founder of the Nobel Prize and meanwhile the father of dynamite. As the world’s most prestigious academic distinction, it is well-known to everyone of us that each single prize is only award to three persons at most.As a result,it also informs us by certain key individuals and only though these figures can we open the way for significant progress in academic world.

In sum, the famous few can serve as an important cataslyst for the most significant events and trends in history.Yet, groups of people can also play a key role at times. On balance this issue should be addressed on a case-by-case basis. People who merely stressing the latter while ignoring the former fails to gain an all-around understanding in the history.(734)

Are people who make the significant events and trends in history those famous few可以这样用吗?可以!, or by the whole mass whose identities have long been forgotten?

during the Civil War原句during the American Civil War是标准写法!

Blacks were in 去掉the vanguard of the anti-slavery movement 原句没错!times上有原句。
till  until?

In contrast Lincoln was not an abolitionist and his main aim in the war was not to end slavery but to get the South back into the Union, and would do this even if it meant retaining slavery. He was in many ways what we would consider in modern terms a typical cautious liberal-a compromiser on serious moral issues, only moving on them when pushed by social movements.

in considering the artistic field, whether the extraordinary masterpieces in our history attribute more to the few outstanding persons or to the forgottable masses should be addressed on a case-by-case basis.

On balance this issue should be addressed on a case-by-case basis.
