161. In this age of intensive media coverage, it is no longer possible for a society to regard any woman or man as a hero. The reputation of anyone who is subjected to media scrutiny will eventually be diminished.

The speaker asserts that any woman or man regarded as hero could scarcely pass the scrutiny of the media. According the common sense analogy, I can not agree with this allege totally.

First of all, media destroys the reputation of social heroes in some extent. For one thing, the media is after all based on a profile-oriented system and their first significant thing is to gain as much money as possible. The scene that one may sit behind the TV and acquire his or her idols’ pink news for a recreation after work or meal is quite prevalent in our daily life. And this pink news are often faked or magnified by the media. For the other thing, the media play as a window to be looked into the celebrity’s life. The ordinary people are doing the normal work and study while there hardly attain the news because of limitation in space and time. The mass are depending on the mainstream media and the media seize the audience’s feature and psychology to gain their profile. The feature may be derive from the human curiosity and gloat to some degree. It is natural that people could not content with just view and hear from their heroes merely about the brilliant facet but, as a human, the mistakes and false behavior are more attractive.

However, the media’s scrutiny is not so strict that no one can pass it with reputation remained. It is undeniable that there is some heroes bring their innocent reputation into the coffin. For example, Audrey Hepburn, the famous actress played in Rome holiday, distinguished herself from other craft brothers with moral and ethic quality. During her lifetime, she was never related to any negative news and devoted herself to high-minded undertaking. Praise walk along with her during her entire star path. Otherwise, even if the hero has undergone a public blame, it does not mean that fame will eventually come to a downfall. Bill Clinton, the most intelligent leader in USA, involved into a sex scandal with his secretary. During the scrutiny, he lied to the public and this is unforgivable then impeach remove his position. When we open the document or record about this president, content about this scandal only takes a short length; on the contrary, more emphasis is placed on the achievement on the economic incline and deficit elimination. Heroes are after all human beings and making mistake is human’s nature. People could understand this and evaluate heroes from both the bright and shadow sides.

In addition, media not only destroy the reputation but also set up models and paragons for some optimistic effect. First, media reflect the social taste and value, therefore, it select the individuals to burden the responsibility to orient the mass value and moral standard. For instance, in China, Lei Feng, a paragon was recognized for his dedication to the four modernizations program devised by the government of the time. Media depicted Lei Feng’s anecdotes to make him perfection. Take consideration of this situation, I find media’s another function which is opposite with devastating the fame. This function may be called encouraging. As human nature, no one could regardless of a praise and recognition, instead, reputation is one of the things people are engaged seeking. Media performs as the judge of celerity’s reputation and often serves as tool to orient the commonalties’ ideology.

In sum, media often can be regarded as a mirror which reflects the person’s merit. However sometimes, this mirror distorts the feature and sometimes magnifies it. The hero’s reputation will affected by it in some degree far from diminishing. Because of the function to evaluate people’s value, media could lead the enthusiasm for fame.
