One goal of human being struggling for is to make much progress as possible as they could, however, how can judge whether what we have done make us progressing or regressing? Some people hold the idea that we can indicate how far we have advanced or retreated only through the use of logic and of precise, careful measurement. Admittedly, the quantitative measurement and logical analysis help us to determine our progress in certain fields, while, it is unhelpful in other fields. So, when concerned with this issue, we should analyze case by case.

In some realms, such as science, education and economics, the quantitative measurement and logical analysis play an essential role in determine whether and what extent we are progressing or regressing. It is obvious that we can make the judgment easily based on scientific and logical data or information. How many theories or hypotheses are proven, or how many patens are put into reality in recent years, We can draw the conclusion just comparing with those of past time, because the comparison can represent the level of science to some extent. It is similar to the education. How many high schools and universities in the country, and how about the average education level of citizens, can demonstrate whether the education is more prosperous than ever.   The crime rate, unemployment rate and so on are distinct mark of economics. According to reasonable survey, we can research the tendency or the track of economics during one period, consequently, we can judge whether the economics is up or down.

However, the quantitative measurement or logical analysis cannot be applied to every aspect. Art is an exact example. The charm of art lies its variety. For this character, it is hard or impossible to define which is inferior and which is superior. For instance, a scientific survey that the classical music is more popular than last year, while the number of people who buy jazz music records is decreasing. We cannot make any conclusion about which is progressing or which is regressing between the classical music and jazz music. There is no unified standard in the kingdom of art. Just like the famous writer Shakespeare said that one thousand audiences have one thousand different “Hamlets” and every one is the best.

With regard to the progress of an individual, the conditions become more complicated. On the one hand, usually in the physical or other aspects which can be quantified, the careful measurement and logical analysis is helpful for us to make sure the actual circumstance. Such example is numerous, if one fevered patient’s temperature falls from 40 to 37 degree, which will help the doctor realize that the patient is better. Similarly, it is a progress for children if they can read more and more letters printed on the newspaper. On the other hand, the change in psychological or moral cannot be quantified simply. Perhaps different people have different definition of “good person” and “evil person”. So how to judge one person is progressing to a good one or regressing to an evil one?

To sum up, the quantitative measurement and logical analysis are useful tools in some fields to some extent, such as science, education and economics. Nevertheless, it is not omnipotent, especially, when we discuss the progress or regress of individuals, its function is weakened. And in the art realm it almost becomes useless. We should make full use of it but never depend on it absolutely.
