TOPIC: ISSUE 185 - "Scandals-whether in politics, academia, or other areas-can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could."
WORDS: 461          TIME: 上午 12:45:00          DATE: 2006-3-23

提纲:
1.        名人丑闻
2.        社会丑闻(education)
3.        娱乐界丑闻

Scandals, actually speaking, are a production of technological advancement of data transmission by newspapers, television, and the internet. Scandals do have its own value concerning its ability to draw people's attention. We often see the fact that the scandals of the celebrated individuals or certain unfavorable social phenomena can lead us to hidden problems and potential crisis in a way that any speaker or reformer can never achieve. On the other hand, I must point out that scandals in the entertainment circle often act as sensational news while do not deserve our attention.

Firstly, let us see the generally defined scandals, which often have relation to noted persons or public figures. With respect to the realm of academia, one need no further to the case of research misconduct at the Massachusettes Institute of Technology (MIT) last year. Van Parijs, an associate professor of biology, was fired last year for his fabricating and falsifying research data. Not only did he ruined the whole work of his group fellows, but his misconduct shocked the faith of science among general population and call for related officials to stress more about the process of scrutiny or censorship in research data or results. Another example is the Watergate scandal, which disclosed the undesirable affairs in the most senior government that we never imagined or expected. In fact, whatever area, scandals of those noted individuals can expose us to certain potential problems that we should give more consideration to.

In the second place, there are some social scandals that play a even more influential part in our detecting and addressing problems. When I was in high school, the debate on exam-centered educational system reached its peak in China, for there was a succession of reports on cases of suicide due to high pressures of study, one of which just occurred in the prestigious school that I studied in. Those cases did cause public unrest and wide concern since children are what the adults care about most. The government had carried out a series of education reforms and did not predict such consequence. Immediately, the Chinese government set out to take urgent steps to reduce the burdens of students.

On the other hand, scandals of entertainment world, which often cover a majority of the headlines, barely have any meaningful effect. Exploring popular stars' private life only serves to satisfy our curiousness and amuse us to a certain extent. However, those scandals affect our life in a way that we can not resist. Further, overexposure of those kinds of scandals would distract our attentions from more important and significant issues.

To summarize, I hope I have well presented that scandals of both celebrities and unfavorable social phenomena sometimes call our attention to significant issues that no speaker or reformer can address or even realize. And the pressure from public concern would force related officials to take proper measures or reforms for the populace’s interest. While scandals from the entertainment circle only serve as amusement materials and sometimes have negative effect.
