1"We can usually learn much more from people whose views weshare than from people whose views contradict our own; disagreement can causestress and inhibit learning."

I concede the speaker’s opinion that to the majority of people, disagreement indeed could cause stress, however, in my point of view, disagreement doesn't inhibit learning and people actually learn much more from those who hold contradictive views than who we share a same one. At the same time, it is the contradictions but not the agreement that contributes the most to the development of mankind.

There are several reasons that I partly agree with the speaker to the opinion that disagreement could and did cause stress in history. It’s a common sense that human is a kind of social but ego-centered animal who thought their own opinions should be the exact right ones thus could hardly get alone with these voices contradict to their own. And people is always looking for security within a group or a team,since the agreement has a function could lead to a feeling of being accepted and supported that it could also bring a certain strong mental security to a single person. While the disagreement’s mental function lies in the scent of a negative atmosphere, shameful or being isolated etc., since disagreement could easily lead to kind of a conflict, in which people was captured by a strong insecurity. For all of the reasons above, disagreement did cause stress. To illustrate: Christian and Islam were both powerful religions who regard each other's believes and principles as opposites, thus caused a strong stress or threatening, rudely reacted as holy wars with Crusades. When facing a different voice, people always tend to play a blind and bad-tempered role automatically and unconsciously, since this used to be an effective method to protect themselves from the stress and threatening caused by disagreements.

However, in my view, disagreement serves a function more than merely in inhibiting learning and people actually learned much more from those whose views we share rather those who hold contradictive ones. Since the main purpose of a contradiction lies in the pursuit of a better explanation or solution to a topic, it becomes essential for them to have a profound understanding of other’s opinion, which might based a totally different observation or analyzing, and figure out the suitable one or combination. While contradictions is an effective process to achieve that purpose, so it won’t be a tough job to realize that actually people learned more from disagreements rather than agreements. One of the most famous scientific debates that people take delight in talking about is the debate between Einstein and Bohr. The debated, endured almost half a century, was based on their academic diversity and has been widely regarded as the greatest urge in physics, since both of the two giants had to analyze deeply the disagreement to develop their own opinion. The debate's enlightening hundreds of young scientists' devoting to the cause of physics also couldn't be easily overlooked.

At the same time, I think it is the contradictions between different voices contributes the most to the development of mankind, especially cognition. One should admit that human’s ability in cognizing is quite localized that we could be possible to understand and explain facts through theories and knowledge which are only suitable within a single period of history or field. As a result, people could hardly find something, especially perfect theories, that is external correct. While it doesn’t mean that we should doubt or stop our process in exploring the un-known but the main purpose of it is not finding or founding an exact solution but the development of human’s cognition, from which a more profound understanding of the universe and human being itself could be available. Since the contradictions between different voices require a sounding and objective mind to analyze and revalue, it should be regarded as an essential access when obtaining a well-developed cognition. On the other hand, it’s a pretty tough job for a person who is satisfied with hearing agreements to march any more. Thus, it is the contradiction caused by disagreements rather than the agreement that contributed the most in human cognition’s development.

To sum up, people actually learned more from the contradictions caused by disagreements than agreement, and what people benefit most from the process of learning is the development of human’s cognition, although, as the price to it, disagreement brings a certain feeling of stress. To urge the growth of cognition, one better learn how to face the stress and analyze the contradiction objectively. Personally, I also would like to hear any voices contradict to this writing, for this might have a tiny contribution to human's development.
