Issue 13
"Many of the world's lesser-known languages are being lost as fewer and fewer people speak them. The governments of countries in which these languages are spoken should act to prevent such languages from becoming extinct."
Outline
It is generally acknowledged that many minor languages are in danger of extinction in human society, owing to used by fewer and fewer people. Nowadays, governments confront with this issue whether they should take actions to prevent such losing languages from vanishing in our hands. In a sense, I agree with the speaker’s assertion insofar as every language is a symbol of culture which is pretty precious legacy handed down by ancestors. With analyzing the proposition comprehensively, however, governments should also focus on the impact of globalization on some less-known languages, which impede the advancement of their society.
Firstly, there are several factors accounting for arresting the current trend of extinct languages. No one can deny the fact that the language or dialect of any nations, which reflects natives’ ways of diverse living and thinking, is part-and-parcel of cultural heritage in the different regions. Under this circumstance, distinctive culture ascribes to its special custom, rituals, mores, and beliefs, but especially language. A nation different from others lies to that it can convey its unique ideas with its only particular language, which is true worth. Therefore, when languages of these regions become dead or extinct, it will lead to lost irreversible and irrecoverable cultural treasures. A case in point is that the French Canadians stubbornly insist on French as their official language in most Canadians region, for the sole purpose of preserving their distinct cultural heritage. On the other hand, youngsters, the important inheritors of traditional culture, now are required to speak standard languages to communicate with others in their education, or they are not prone to play a role as the link in the chain of language lineage. Local language, such as dialect, indigenous language, is only used to converse with family members, not to others, which bring out some inconvenience in day-to-day life. Moreover, they regard speaking modern language as the sense of fashion and self-worth with which the youth are fascinated. The traditional language, in contrast, is disregarded as obsolete, mostly spoken by the senior people.
Since the trend of fewer and fewer spoken language and the value of cultural heritage are fading in the recent daily life, it is time for government that they should prevent the heirlooms from disappearing. The foundation of government is to provide the researchers and professors on the field of minor language with suffice financial support in order to make them record and perverse the document of traditional language and cultures as much as possible. The advantage of this method is that the document is conducive to restore and hand down from generation to generation. In the long term, government should encourage the youth and adolescences to speak local language as often as possible, even dialect in their daily studying and living. Gradually, many of them may be interested in this language, even appreciate the value of their own culture. What is more, it is necessary for government that speaking their native language enables persons living in their regions to take pride in the uniqueness and preciousness of culture, presented by language.
Admittedly, the extinction of less-known language, to some extent, is the aftermath of globalization, in which the whole world is now becoming a global village with people in different countries sharing each others’ customs and cultures. In this process, there is a problem of communication with different language, which is a barrier to each culture exchange. Another reason which needs more attention is that various languages, especially minor languages, have drawbacks to international trade and the integration of financial markets all over the world, so the English is considered as the official language. Hence, government, as the policy-making body, should weigh the merits and demerits of local languages used in their nations with respects to economics, culture and the like.
In conclusion, although every language owns its irreplaceable cultural value, government should not hastily only preserve the extinct of local languages. They could not neglect its negative influence on the economics of nation or region in the fierce competitive world.
