Nowadays much more attention is paid on thepeople's look, dress and act than it used to be. Insofar as the appearancealways served as the paramount role in the impression on others, it has beenregarded as one of the most important and natural avenues to a society's ideasand values. That's why the necessities for observing the appearance andbehavior to understand the society's ideas and values become more and moremanifest.
The reason for my fundamental agreementwith the speaker is that for groups of people their appearance and behavior canactually disclose the part of their attitudes and interests. Firstly, theappearances, for example, the professors usually wear the formal suits. Howevera singer or some kind of musicians may wear nonmainstream clothes which arefull of exaggerations. Obviously the professor would exchange their suits withthe pop stars' hip-hop T-shirts.
Inversely the appearance can reflect their profession and something likesocial status which conveys their attitudes and interests. Secondly theirbehaviors are also the vital factor which uncovers those attributions. Forinstance, the Japanese emphasize on the etiquette in his daily life. Sometimesyou may consider their behaviors as something unnatural and even feel uncomfortable. However those trifling etiquettes are the important parts of their culture ofloyalty which originated from their samurai spirits. And either the loyalty orthe samurai spirits definitely reflect their attitudes deeply rooted in theirtraditions and culture.
Nevertheless, I might caution thatextending the assertion too far may risk undermining the objectivity of theissue.
Since every individual isindependent from the others, his thoughts are unique and cannot be easilycopied.
Because of the existence of suchkind of unique, those similar appearance and behaviors cannot offer insightsinto one person. Similarly from that common appearance of its people we cannottell the accurate ideas about the society's ideas and values. Firstly from theindividual level, the appearance of a person is sometimes decorated withcamouflage. For example, bill gates may wear a very plain suits walking on theWall Street as an ordinary citizen in New York.
At the same time, not all the people has the freedom to completelychoose their appearance according to their preference, since those objectiveconditions are limited. For example they may not have enough money and probablybe ruled not to wear suits except the uniform. Secondly from the social level, the condition that the society's ideas and values can be found out from theappearance of the people is that the society is based on the nation withoutdeceiving and obligations.
And in someconditions people's behaviors are controlled by the politicians who have the demagoguerybehavior are living in the undemocratic country. For example in China QingDynasty, both men and women have pigtails on their heads which was the rule forevery subject in the country.
Finally there exists another doubt aboutthe speaker's proposition. That is the value is a person's judgments and ideasabout the surrounding objective things and objects. Thus obviously the valueexists in a person's inner mind which cannot be easily dug out. Further, it isabsurd that the appearance can reflect the value of a person.
From all the evidence stated above, we candraw the conclusion that the appearance and behaviors of people can to someextent uncover people's attitudes and interests, however its effect onreflecting the ideas and values are unfortunately limited. Perhaps theappearance can just offer us some preference for understanding of the world butthey are not the vital factors.
