Grounding on some studies taken by Bronston College show that professors are happier when
live with their spouses in the small town, the arguer synthesizing that giving each of the new professor’s spouse a employment in the university will enhance the morale and in the mean time attract more gifted professors to accept the offers d researchers and improve the morale of staff, the department chairperson of Pierce University concludes that give a chance of employment to the spouse of the professors will attract the new professors to accept their offers. However, careful scrutiny reveals the argument lends on several flaws as it stands.
To begin with, the studies conducted by Bronston College are problematic. On one hand, the writer does not provide the detail information of the studies, for example how many of the professors take part in the surveys and whether these professors are the representative of the entire professors. On the other hand, the writer fails to give cogent evidence to substantiate that the Bronston College is located in the small town.
In addition, even though the study is credible and the Bronston College is in the small town, the writer fails to consider the difference between Pierce University and Bronston College which may contributes to a different consequence to Pierce University. Perhaps, the Pierce University is placed in the big city, so that many professors and their spouses will feel uncomfortably when they are working. Or perhaps, the quality of the professors in Pierce University are over than Bronston, and they want more priority condition, for example, they want their spouses work in a comfortable environment and gain high salary.
Finally, even though the strategy can attract many new professors, the writer unfairly asserts the morale of their entire staff will be improved. As we common known, the morale is depends on many factors, like the wages, the work environment, the reputation of the college etc. Only offering a employment to the professor’s spouse can not boost the morale of the whole staff, what’s more, not all the professors have spouses.
In sum, this argument is based on several immature evidence and thus unconvincing, to solidify the argument, the writer must provide cogent evidence to justify that the studies taken in the Bronston College are credible, and moreover, the writer should list support to substantiate that the situation of the Pierce University is similar with the Bronston College. To better assess the argument, the writer should still give sufficient evidence to bolster his assertion that the morale of the entire staff in the Pierce University will be boosted when the strategy has be implemented. |
