TOPIC: ISSUE39 - "The intellectual benefits of attending a university or college are vastly overrated: most people could learn more by studying and reading on their own for four years than by pursuing a university or college degree."
WORDS: 475                                DATE: 2010/3/31 21:58:34

Based on the assertion that one had better learn by himself rather than attending a college or university as they could learn more, the writer's indication draws attention to a widely discussed topic: which is better, college life or self education? In my opinion, systematic college education metod, hardware, facuty,  and well-arranged curriculum would do much better than  the adventure of a non-experience tutor's studying in how to teach himself at home.
While teaching oneself, the utmost and ultimate problem is: what to learn, and how? In the case that not everyone is taught to teach- although ones may have some idea about the subject they are engaged to learn- they have no idea about the courses that they should learn. For example, in order to master chemistry to a degree, one should learn or at least know about inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, and so on. That is to say, one should not only know the subject, but also every branch of it- if the branch is essential- and that is the serious weakness that a home-made curriculum may have.
Besides the weakness in curriculum, enough resources in teaching is beyond possibility and one's ability. Providing "What to learn" is settled,  "How to learn" is still up in the air. For instance, a systematic and experimental subject like chemistry, it is insuffecient to master it without enough experience in experiment and practice. But according to ordinary condition one could not manage to receive enough experience by himself. Like chemical reagent, chemical instrument, skilled oprator and maintainer, they're essential in experiment but exceeding one's capability to equip them all- but they are common in common collages and universities.
Brushing all the negative factors aside, the thought of learning by oneself fail to provide the surroundings and atomsphere of research and study that inspire  green hands into skilled researchers and experts and that is rich in collages and universities. Teamwork, discussion, inspiration and communication plays the vital role in research. Only one brain is limited to implement an idea and realize it. The birth of a ripe theory is just like a product from an assembling line, one thought is fulfilled by the thinkers at the line, each have a component and install it on the thought which succeeded from the one before, therefore a complete thought emerges. So in order to have a brilliant future in research one should attend collages and universities to step into the atomsphere of research.
In summary, a home made educator- and at the same time a learner- is unable to provide enough resources and a well-arranged curriculum about learning. Without solution to what to learn and how to learn, a education that teach by oneself instead of studying in university and collage, with the lack of both hardware and software support ,is doomed to be unfruitful.

In my opinion, systematic college education metod, hardware, facuty,  and well-arranged curriculum would do much better than  the adventure of a non-experience tutor's studying in how to teach himself at home.(首先看题目,进入大学的intellectual benefits are overrated,那么你就要明确,进入大学的intellectual benefits是什么,显然题目中认为进入大学的benefitget a degree,那么你要说明的就不只是比较college life and self education,而是在大学学习不止于pursuing a degree对不对?你也旨在说明这一点是不是?)
While teaching oneself, the utmost and ultimate problem is: what to learn, and how?
In the case that not everyone is taught to teach- although ones may have some idea about the subject they are engaged to learn- they have no idea about the courses that they should learn. (我看懂了你的逻辑,不在于说基本的what to learn or how to learn,而在于what’s more to learn and how to learn better,是不是?)
