Despite a good performance by the Tampa Bay Rays All-Stars, the American League still lost the 2010 All-Star Game last night by a score of 3-1 to the National League, who won the annual event for the first time since 1996 – the 2002 All-Star Game ended in a tie. The win gives the National League home field advantage in the World Series. In addition to many exciting moments over the past week, the All-Star event also experienced some sadness.

The game opened with a moment of silence for George Steinbrenner, owner of the New York Yankees. He died the morning of the game at the age of 80. Under Steinbrenner’s ownership. the Yankees won 11 pennants and 7 World Series. Fans may have disagreed with his tactics, but few can deny that Steinbrenner had a tremendous influence on Major League Baseball. Many will miss him.
The All-Star event for many started on Monday night with the Home Run Derby. David Ortiz (aka Big Papi), the Boston Red Sox’s famous slugger, participated for the fourth time and won the event. Milwaukee Brewers hitter Corey Hart highlighted the first round with 13 homers, but had nothing left for the next one.

After two rounds, Florida Marlins' Hanley Ramirez and Ortiz were tied with 21 home runs each. In the third and final round. Big Papi hit another 11 home runs to win, which tied the final round record set by Bobby Abreu in 2005. Afterwards, an exuberant Ortiz lofted the trophy over his head. His large smile said it all, and set the scene for the main event the next day.

The All-Star Game provided fans with an exhibition of outstanding pitching. Tampa Bay’s David Price started the game for the American League, and Colorado’s Ubaldo Jimenez took the mound for the National League. All told, the American League pitchers dished up seven hits, while the winning team gave up six. The National League struck out eight batters, and the American League pitchers struck out 10 in a losing effort. In the top of the ninth, Detroit’s Jose Valverde struck out the three batters he faced.

Tampa Bay’s Evan Longoria started out the game with a double off Jimenez, but the American League could not capitalize on it, and Longoria was left stranded. The Rays star third baseman walked in the fifth and scored the American League’s only run on a Robinson Cano sac fly. Also representing Tampa Bay in the game was veteran outfielder Carl Crawford, who walked and stole a base, and closer Rafael Soriano, who pitched a hitless eighth inning.

For the National League, their offense occurred in the seventh inning. Braves catcher Brian McCann hit a bases-clearing three-run double off of White Sox reliever Matt Thornton that would eventually turn out to be the game winner. Two of the runs were charged to Yankees pitcher Phil Hughes. McCann won the Ted Williams All-Star MVP for his efforts and marked the first time an NL catcher won the award since Mike Piazza earned it in 1996.

If the Braves make it to the World Series, they can thank their catcher for providing them with the home field advantage. Heading into the seconf half of the season, they currently lead the National League East by four games over the New York Mets.

Book review: "The Empire Strikes Out" overstates baseball's role in U.S. foreign policy

February 25, 2010    By Cardiff Garcia

A sportswriter should be careful when assessing the importance of sports within broader spheres such as politics or economics, and avoid the temptation to exaggerate.
In “The Empire Strikes Out: How Baseball Sold US Foreign Policy and Promoted the American Way Abroad,” published this month, Robert Elias takes the opposite approach, condemning two centuries of American foreign policy while giving baseball a massively overstated role.
No wonder the book is unconvincing, ponderous, and often just plain silly. Missing is any subtlety about the complex history of America’s (and baseball’s) engagement with the world—a history that includes colonialism, yes, but also diplomacy, benign trade, and migration flows into and out.
Elias presents baseball as a kind of imperial Jedi mind trick, deployed by governments (and especially the U.S. government) to subdue whole populations. Thus we read that Japan and Cuba were “targets” of the “US baseball imperialism” that started in the nineteenth century. But while Japan managed to escape “being controlled by the sport, as had other targets of U.S. invasions,” in Cuba the politicians even used it as a form of “social control.”
In the Philippines, military-enforced baseball leagues helped pacify the conquered natives, while in South Korea the sport would become “a mania and a tool of government control.”
In addition to these exaggerations, the book entertains some truly strange ideas. Elias uncritically passes along the opinion of “some” who claim that baseball won the Civil War for the North because it was used to “create happier and healthier soldiers for the battlefield.” The Civil War, by the way, was “cloaked” in the rationale of preserving the Union, but really it was when America’s “first notions of full-blown empire may have emerged.”

And consider this stunning passage about a later war: “Thus, to baseball’s true believers, Pearl Harbor was a cruel blow. When baseball wasn’t blaming Japanese weakness or treachery, it instead wondered whether baseball had failed in its ‘self-appointed mission to save the world and export the American dream.’”
So in response to Pearl Harbor, baseball wondered whether baseball had failed in baseball’s mission to save the world. What does that even mean? This would probably be more infuriating if it made any sense.
Then there is globalization, a process that Elias berates the United States and organized baseball for having the gall to participate in. The United States, you see, is a “corporate consumerist juggernaut” and is “robbing meaning from our lives.” It is also “a Darwinian society that doesn’t believe in Darwinism and an empire that’s weaker than Americans might think.”
He goes on: “Much of the world dislikes a United States, and most Americans don’t know or care.” Really? Did he ask them if they don’t know or care?
Elias demonstrates little understanding of how the global marketplace for people, ideas, goods and services actually works. With respect to baseball, he writes that a foreign player joining a Major League Baseball team is essentially the same as pillaging another country’s baseball talent. He never considers the possibility that such success stories have inspired many more kids in the home country, who otherwise wouldn’t have bothered, to take up the game.
Strained comparisons that link baseball and American militarism are generously sprinkled throughout the book. In another astonishing but typical sequence, Elias compares the deaths of Iraqis in the first Gulf War and an American massacre of a village in Vietnam with Major League Baseball’s willingness to “destroy the village as well” by launching “a war against its own players.” This is how the book explains the attempts to roll back free agency in the 1980s and 1990s.
Reading such nonsense is at first unsettling, but eventually it is just exhausting, especially after 300 pages of it.
The one thing to be said in the book’s favor is that it contains plenty of colorful characters and intriguing anecdotes from baseball’s history abroad. Had Elias simply told these stories and kept his political views out of the way, this might have been a good book. But he didn’t.

Surprise! Cliff Lee Heading Back to Philly
By: SEAN GREGORY
Topics: BASEBALL, CLIFF LEE, NEW YORK YANKEES, PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES, PITCHER, SPORTS

The most pessimistic group of sports fans on the planet - those who cheer for Philadelphia sports teams - now have an unexpected reason to be delirious. In one of the most surprising off-season moves in recent baseball history, Texas Rangers ace Cliff Lee, one of the best pitchers in the game, took less money to sign with  . . .the Phillies?
Yes, it's true. Last off-season, the Phillies traded Lee, who helped the team reach the 2009 World Series, to the Seattle Mariners, since they didn't couldn't afford both him and pitcher Roy Halladay, the former American League Cy Young winner who they had acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays. The deal worked out for Philadelphia: Halladay pitched a perfect game during the regular season, won his second Cy Young, and opened the playoffs with a no-hitter. Anchored by their excellent staff, the Phillies made the National League Championship series for the third straight season, though they lost to the red-hot San Francisco Giants. Philadelphia missed Lee - what team couldn't use another dominant ace? But they were still one of the best teams in baseball without him.
(See the top 10 sports moments of 2010.)
And now they have him back? Does a Phillies fan really have no good reason to be angry? Lee reportedly signed a five-year, $120 million contract with Philadelphia, leaving some $30 million on the table from the New York Yankees. Don't think Phillies fans were the only ones applauding. Fans, and executives, from smaller market teams love seeing the Yankees get spurned. Lee is now a bit of a folk hero. It turns out that it's not New York's divine light to snap up the best free agent on the market every year.
(See the 10 things to watch this baseball season.)
On paper, Philadelphia's rotation of Lee, Halladay, Roy Oswalt and Cole Hammels could be one of the best in decades. And while the Yankees are desperate for a top-line starter this off-season, their highest-profile signing has been Derek Jeter, an aging shortstop probably not worth the $51 million they forked over to him. Philadelphia has always lived in New York's shadow. But in baseball, Brotherly Love is beating the pants off the Big Apple.
