Questions and Answers for Test Takers in the GRE Analytical Writing Test Security Case
Why are scores from the November 2002 administration of the paper-based GRE General Test being held for test takers in China, Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong?
Officials of the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) Program are investigating the validity of GRE General Test scores for 900 test takers in China, Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong because there is evidence the Analytical Writing essays for these individuals may not be valid.
What do you mean "may not be valid"?
The Analytical Writing section is designed to show whether the test taker can write an essay that shows their ability to think critically and write analytically. If they do their own work and create an essay that reflects original thought, then the score they get is valid or useful for graduate admission purposes.
Why would a score not be valid?
In this case, ETS officials believe that some of the 900 questioned scores may not be valid because they contain paragraphs and sentences containing identical language or subject references. Officials have discovered that the source of some of the material submitted is Patterns of Culture, by Ruth Benedict.
What does ETS think happened?
This is what the investigation hopes to determine. It may be that people other than the test takers have provided pre-written essays in advance. When test takers use these pieces of writing, their essays are not valid indicators of their critical thinking and analytical writing ability.
Was this a widespread occurrence?
No. More than 5,100 other individuals from these countries tested properly.
If ETS officials decide some scores are not valid, what happens to those scores?
They will not be reported either to the test takers or the schools to which they are applying. They will be cancelled and their testing fee will be forfeited.
Will the cancellation be on the student's record?
No record of the test scores will remain. They will simply be cancelled.
Can test takers sign up for the GRE and test again?
Yes, they can test at the next administration of the GRE depending on whether there is space for them. Having their scores questioned and cancelled does not affect their right to test again in the future.
Will all three GRE General Test scores be cancelled or just the score on the Analytical Writing section?
All three General Test scores (Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical Writing) will be cancelled.
How will I be able to apply to graduate school without any GRE General Test scores?
If you are one of the test takers whose scores are cancelled, you will have to wait until you can take the test in the future. You should contact the graduate school(s) to which you plan to apply to inquire about their policies.
How will I know what is happening with my General Test scores?
When your General Test scores are released, you will receive a copy. Until you receive your scores, you must assume they are on hold for review.
How soon will the investigation be concluded?
Officials are currently reviewing the 900 essays and officials expect it will take until at least January 19th. A special panel of measurement and testing experts will meet on January 20th, review the findings, and issue their ruling. Information will be provided on the GRE Web site shortly thereafter. Notification to test takers will begin immediately thereafter.
Will the names of test takers who have had their scores cancelled appear on the GRE Web site?
No. Only the total number of cancellations among the 900 will appear on the Web site. The only people who will know of the score cancellations will be the test takers themselves.
How can test takers avoid this happening again? Aren't they supposed to memorize materials in preparation for the test?
Test takers should prepare for the tests, but the purpose of the Analytical Writing essay is to demonstrate to the colleges and universities where these individuals are applying for graduate school that they can think critically and write analytically. By memorizing and duplicating passages and materials that are the work of others, test takers are jeopardizing their chances for admission to colleges and universities in the United States. Individuals must do their own work or risk graduate admissions officers disregarding their GRE scores during the application process. |
