题目:ARGUMENT186 - The following is a recommendation from the director of personnel to the president of Professional Printing Company.
"In a recent telephone survey of automobile factory workers, older employees were less likely to report that having a supervisor present increases their productivity. Among workers aged 18 to 29, 27 percent said that they are more productive in the presence of their immediate supervisor, compared to 12 percent for those aged 30 or over, and only 8 percent for those aged 50 or over. Clearly, if our printing company hires mainly older employees, we will increase productivity and save money because of the reduced need for supervisors."

To increase productivity and save money, the author proposes to hire mainly older employees. It seems logical because older employees are less likely to report that having a supervisor present increases their productivity, in that case, the productivity will be increased and money paid to the supervisor will be saved. This conclusion seems logical, but what it reasoned is questionable. First, the survey is not sufficient to support the conclusion. Second, older employees’ productivity do not decrease doesn’t means they are more productive than the younger workers. In addition, save the money paid to the supervisor do not means the company’s total money will be saved.
The survey conducted among the works is not reliable to support the result. The survey cited was conducted in the automobile factory workers, but we are a printing company, maybe the work in that factory is much more harder than us, so the young workers are loaf on the job when supervisor are not in. Lacking of sufficient study, the author could not hastily cited the survey.
In spite of the survey, what is the most important is that younger workers have a much better energy than older people. Compared to the order people, they can work for a longer time with all passion, but the older people may be tired and have to rest. And they are better to learn new skills and technologies which can improve the efficiency. With all those advantages, hiring younger workers are more likely to increase productivity rather than the older works.
The director point out that the reduced need for supervisor will save money. This is really works, but the company can take many methods to get this result. For example, a course about the rules for the young works will make them work harder without the supervisor; a video monitor will get the same effect as a man supervisor. There are many ways can make younger workers like the older in the aspect of attitude without cost much money. In addition, save the money paid to the supervisor do not equal to the cost decreased in the whole company. For example, older people are likely to have illness which company has to pay a lot of money to guarantee; older people always have much more salaries than the younger people. So the cost of the company will be even increased at last.
Unless the author can provide more substantial evidence to support the hiring of older employees, the solution can’t be doubtfully obtain the oriental purpose. Indeed, hiring younger workers and make them work the same without the supervisor will be a better solution.
