What are the limits of our duty to study history? As today is new and complex,the past have little influence in living in the present. The statement raises a issue about history.On balance,however,I fundamentally agree with the notion that it is not easy to grasp today,but history should be studied because it is essential to individuals and to society,and because it harbors beauty.
As I see it, there are two fundamental arguments for how history guide present life.According to this argument,the first is about history offers a storehouse of information about how people and societies behave.How can we understand genius, the influence of technological innovation, or the role that beliefs play in shaping family life, if we don't use what we know about experiences in the past?Even the recourses depend on historical information, except for in limited, often artificial cases in which experiments can be devised to determine how people act. Consequently, history must serve, however imperfectly, as our laboratory.This, fundamentally, is why we cannot stay away from history: it offers the only extensive evidential base for the contemplation and analysis of how societies function, and people need to have some sense of how societies function simply to run their own lives.The second argument has to do with inescapable. This argument disregards the extent to how the past helps us understand change and the society we live in came to be.History is inescapable as a subject of serious study follows closely on the first.The past causes the present,and so the future.Sometimes fairly recent history will suffice to explain a major development,but often we need to look further back to identify the causes of change.Only through history can we grasp how things change today;only through history can we begin to comprehend the factors that cause change;and only through history can we understand the new and complex today.
On the other hand are two compelling arguments against studing history has little guidance for living in present.The first is essentially the history has past,it can not fit the present trend,you can not understand today's ideas,culture and fashion with an old past perspective. Just like some old person have troubled in playing new and complex things,such as ipad.The second argument, and the one that I find most compelling,is an appeal to innovation.If people only follow the track of the past,how can we have innovative ability to face and develop the new and complex world today.Consider,for instance,China,as one of the world's four countries of great ancient civilizations,is famous for its scientific discoveries in ancient times.Only later on,especially in late Qing Dynasty,did the feudal rulers adopt a policy of seclusion,which hampered China's progress and its exchanges with the outside world.The understanding of the past did not save Qing Dynasty,but had accelerated its demise,meant in future death and ruin of this country.However,as new China implements its reform and opening to the outside world,it is changing with each passing day.It's all because China do not adhere to the past,it tightly seizes the current strategic opportunities,move with the times,make explorations and innovations.Thus,China keep a sustained,rapid and sound economic growth.
To sum up.the issue of the past and today is a complex one,requiring us to think about what kind of history should be studied.Many of the benefits of history derive from various kinds of history,whether local or national or focused on one culture or the world.However,innovation requires emancipating our minds and keeping pace with the ceaseless progress today,we can no longer rely solely on the past to develop and expand the society.

Time is changing as the society is advancing .There are increasingly new and complex factors being incited in the fresh world . We are facing opportunities as well as challenges at the same time . As a resault , sometimes ,we may feel confused about

problems existed in our life ; sometimes ,the situation is beyound our control ; and sometimes ,we may lost our direction going forward , knowing nothing about what to do . If it is the case ,the best way to survive is refering to the past ------contrast to the title statement ,I personally hold the opinion that what has been in the past is the best guidance for living in today’s world.
It is not to deny that our ancestors are smart and wise .Their wit could soft our complexity and teach us a lot .Kongzi(known by his laconized name as confucius),the most famous and important philosopher in ancient China , is served as a good example .His thoughts and philosophy about politics ,education ,rights and responsibilities for civils etc. have been shaping people in China since 2000 years before .He taught us how to study , how to treat others around us , how to keep peace in our heart , which would still have great influence on the whole society until now . Many professors in China now are doing researches about Kongzi’s philosophy and explain it to common people through TV ,books ,CD etc., which has attracted a lot of citizens and benefited
them a lot. His wisdom can be used to solve many problems in front of us , undermining our presure,making our life easier and happier .

I cannot full agree with the author because with the developing of the era, history is a treasure of human being感觉有点问题. People have been learnt a lot from the history. Some experience protects people from mistake. At the same time, History is without effect in some high-tech area有问题.

First of all, the lesson from history taught us something【what】 is wrong. From the cost of war, we know the power of atomic bomb by the history of Hiroshima and Nagasaki【前因后果有点倒置了？】. After the explosion, the city turned into a purgatory, all the building was【复数】 destroyed. The civilian is homeless and somebody probably suffered from the strong radiation was ill even becoming a mutation【时态问题】. So we all try to keep in peace in the whole world【论证不够说服力】. And from the World War 2 and American civil war, we know the genocide should be forbidden and dictatorship is a ridiculous thing.【论证重复，论句不足】

Secondly, some achievement is【单复数】 based from the form research. As Isaac Newton said "If I have been able to see further, it was only because I stood on the shoulders of giants." With the development of science, the technologies today are becoming more and more complex and unimaginable. As our life today is ringing on these new technologies, some people believe that looking back for an understanding of the past provides little guidance for living in the present. However, I can not totally agree with such opinion, as the history, even can do little in some aspects, in most situations, can help us realize the present and foresee the further.

I do accept that life today is totally different with the lift in the past, which does make a huge gap between past and present. Thanks to the phone calls, now we can communicate with friends or families who are thousands of kilometers away. And with Internet, we can know what happen, big or small, in the world in each second. The new and complex information technology knit a web that get the whole world together. The era that we have to wait the “write back” for several months is gone and the feeling for such experience can do little to guide people's life today. Not mentioned the transportation system, which has experienced several fundamental transform after the Industrial Revolution. has also change the rate of people lift in the present. In all the aspects I mentioned above, looking back for an understanding of the past can do nothing seems sound and convincing.

However, the difference is superficial and, if we dig out deeper, we will find that they are closely connected with each other under the surface, in the intellectual, moral and ethical aspects, which is the basic element of our society.
No matter how we connect with our friends, the purpose is always the same. We do not want to be alone, which decided by our human nature. So we can easily reveal what our present spiritual condition actually is, if we can understand the same feeling of our ancestor, in spite of the different communication ways. The examples are all around us, like the tradition, which is obviously based on the understanding of the past. In China, people always get home and get together in New Year festival, which is totally the same as what they have done in thousands of years ago. And the tradition to gather with the families members actually guides the people's life in all aspects, including the present. Granted that the technologies are different, our human nature is always the same no matter how new and complex the society is.

Furthermore, history is always telling vivid stories to guide us about the future. England, China and German all were the most powerful empires in the world. However these great empires all collapsed. Why? Only the history can tell us the reason. And only understanding the history, we can avoid failing in the same way. Think about the war and peace in human history. It seems that all the era is the replay of last age, even the "actors" are changed. The rise and fall of different nations are extremely similar. There is so much we can get from the analysis of the past. This great treasure are buried in the dust of time, but it can clearly guide the whole society or the nation if we can unearth them.

To sum up, without the understanding of the past, we can only see the superficial different between we and the past; without the understanding of the past, we will forget our cultures; without understanding of the past, we will get into the circle of history and never realize that. In my opinion, understanding of the past is significant important in not only guidance what the life is in the present but also guide what we should do now for a better future.
