The Story

Trademark was formed by two cousins, Oliver Horton & Stuart Meads with the initial intention of writing and performing their own material using synthetic electronic sounds. In 1999 they enlisted Paul Soulsby as their third member. In January 2001, they recorded two brand new songs and began work on new material. The band launched their new Website which features downloadable tracks from the band as well as a collection of photographs taken of the band during different eras. 2002 saw the band start gigging properly, they have played several venues in Oxford & London, they also began work on their album Fear : Disconnection, which was completed & made available in early 2003..

It’s impossible to keep it together whilst listening to Sol De Cada’s arresting output. ‘Another Time’ is a beautiful cut that evokes the best of U.N.K.L.E. circa the ‘Psyence Fiction’ album in which trip hop beats, beautiful strings, samples and spine tingling keys encompassed some of the greatest vocal performances of the era. ‘Policy’ is a little more playful and is slightly jazzy around the edges yet equally seduces. Here’s a band with some nice philosophies (read below and help spread their word) and some great tunes to back them up. ‘Moonstruck’ immediately takes hold with its seductive trip hop/dubby feel and fragile Bjork/Lamb style vocal. It’s a moody piece that also manages to give off warmth thanks to swathes of keyboard effects and scintillating production. ‘Jah Works’, although minus the vocal, is just as captivating and mines a radiant, ambient soundscape. Strings and beats - the trip hop staple, begin this little journey into the musical minds of the Escapists. A big, fat sub-bass line, built around a dub figure, fills out the bottom end whilst a haunting violin line provides the melodic interest. A well put together and interesting tune.

madcharlie@hotmail.com Launch gig: 11/6/02 7.00pm, The Spitz, London EC1 The CD came about due to a programme called Vinyl Dreams produced by a charity, Shape in Islington. Vinyl Dreams provides a unique opportunity for disabled musicians to both record and perform new music. Additional funding came from Islington Council and the Arts Council. The band grew out of the Rainbow Community in Kentish Town back in ’96. Two collectives followed, one a jamming sound system ‘Sounds Anonymous’ and the other ‘Binky Bonk’ drum circle. There was cross-pollination between the two collectives with resulting residencies at Megatripolis, Hibernation, Return To The Source and Undertow as well as gigs at Bagley’s, HQ’s and Glastonbury. From 1998 to 2001 the collectives held down a series of underground music spaces in the Kings Cross area. The Escapists formed from this background in 2001 to put together the CD and work on some more structured ideas for live performance. Much of the inspiration comes from the band’s experience of the mental health system. The resulting music explores the boundary between acoustic instruments and electronica and covers the genres of dance, ambient, trip hop, folk and weirdness. Caglar the newest member of the group is one of the most exciting filmmakers around and provides a vivid backdrop to what is happening when on stage. In October 2001 The Escapists played a tour called ‘Attitude is Everything’. Venues included Dingwalls in Camden, Colchester Arts Centre, Brighton Concorde, Liverpool Picket and Manchester Band on the Wall. Since then we have been playing around the London circuit. As I have been playing with a wide variety of musicians and I wanted this to be reflected in the CD. I decided to do each track with a different co-producer, in a different studio and with different musicians. This made life a little difficult as I had to learn new working methods for ea

Don't let the name put you off, this is an excellent fusion of modern dance loops and top-notch jazz playing all topped off by some ultra smooth chatting. Think US3 or Freakpower and just let it wash right over you.
