There’re two hypotheses attempting to explain the declining population of sea otters. The reading passage suggests that environmental pollution is a better explanation, while in the lecture the professor tells us that the predator hypothesis better explains what’s going on.
Firstly, the passage argue that pollution such as oil rigs and industrial chemical may decrease the otter’s resistance to deadly infection and thus make its population decline greatly. But the lecture opposes it, saying that the pollution hypothesis isn’t consistent with the fact that no dead otters have been found off the beaches. If they were killed by predators, however, it’s natural that the predators eat their bodies after hunting, which perfectly explains the fact.
Secondly, that seals, sea lions and other sea mammals’ population also declines doesn’t contradict with the predator hypothesis, according to the lecture. As human hunters may cause the decline in whale population, orcas may change their diet and get other smaller sea mammals available. So it’s not so strange that other sea mammals also decrease.
Thirdly, the lecture argues that the uneven pattern of otter decline can be better explained by the predator hypothesis. As the areas where otter population remains stable are precisely those not accessible to orcas such as shallow and rocky areas.


独立：young people should try several different job before they take a career in a long term
I agree with the statement that young people should try several jobs before taking a career in a long term. The reason I support it lies in that such an experience not only help them choose the job that matches them best but also will act as a helpful element in their future life.
As the old Chinese proverb goes, hearing about something one hundred times is less useful than seeing it once. Trying different jobs gives a young man the real chance to determine which job is the one for him. What benefits from the proper choice of their career is not only the young but also the whole society, as they can raise the efficiency to the most in doing the job they love. For instance, when my mum was young, she tried several jobs including soldier, nurse, and statistician. Finally she chose saleswoman for her career. It is obvious that she spends every day more happily and energetically than before. The foreseeable better performances of young people in their suitable jobs will help the society as a whole.
What's more, trying several jobs before determining the lifelong career gives young people a lot of useful experience, which will continue to help them in the future. If you once worked as a cook in the restaurant, your family will benefit a lot from your brilliant cooking skill. If you worked in a garage for some time, it'll save you a lot of time when your car comes across small problems. Furthermore, the ability to switch between different groups of people and adapt to new environments help you get along with your life and career better, as you won't be afraid of trying new things and face different challenges. In other words, how can making new friends even become a problem if you have succeeded in getting on well with several new jobs?
In conclusion, I think it really helpful for young people to try several jobs before determining their career. I'd like to suggest every young man around me to follow this advice.
