Do you agree or disagree that newspapers and magazines is the best way of learning about a foreign country.

As the modern media blooms, it opens up a brand new window for us to look into a foreign country. Though some may claims that merely mass media, without direct experience, cannot present us with real images of cultrure. In my point of view, however, they are fairly interesting and effienctient way to know about a different country.

To begin with, we can not only know about the history of one culture but also could get in touch with the latest trend there by browsing their popular newspapers and magazines. For example, some anecdotes regarding famous celebrities enable us know about the spirits and history of this country. And some pictures regarding fashionable clothes are available in newspapers and magazines as well. It is due to the fact that media are run by professional people who respond sensitively to changes in society. As a result, by combining these two kinds of information, we could apprehend one country more comprehensively and completely. I once talked with a native in the US, he was so surprised that I knew about so many history stories about the western world and could also comment on the dressing of Michelle Obama. I told him that it should attribute to my secrest information resource - the printed production in the US.

Secondly, it is extremely convenient and economical to know about another culture just buy purchasing some newspapers and magazines. Just take myself as an example. I am now a college student who cannot earn money by my own. So it is almost impossible for me to travel to another country to feel their culture, though I admit that way would be fantastic. However, newspapers and magazines could compensate my regrets. Each week I spend two days staying in my college’s reading room to take a glance at different kinds of publications. I enjoy the feeling of sitting in the flat and comfortable table, drinking a cup of tea and travelling by my eyes in the well-designed publications as will. That is really a spiritual feast for me. Whenever I feel down or upset, I could just pick up some magazines, reading some exotic stories that I have never experienced, then I will be energetic and refreshed again. And most importantly, this “journey” cost me almost nothing! Not everyone can afford the time and money to go abroad, however, that does not prevent us from knowing about the outside due to the presence of newspapers and magazines.

To sum up, newspapers and magazines are condensed reflection of culture. Luckily, they are economically acceptable and accessible. As for me, there is no reason to resist their unique charm.
