2011.1.15 Some people think university professors should spend more time doing research while others think they should spend more time educating students. What is your view? (Education) 二选一 Instruction and research are two major responsibilities of current university professors. And when it comes to whether it is necessary for professors to spend more time teaching students or doing research, opinions varies from person to person as peoples’ distinctive background and experience. With closer weigh the pros and cons, I believe that professor should concentrate on his or her research work. First of all, it is obvious that nobody is more suitable than university professors for scientific research. Thus they should follow the development of science and technology. In other words, if they don’t have enough time to research, no one can substitute for them. For example, some projects may take the research team several months to accomplish them. Therefore, the teaching responsibility will distract the professor a lot, and influence the result of projects. Although it is conceivable that the time spent on instruction will promote the quality of education, in my point of view, instruction is not the major mission of the university professors.
In addition, professors can also assign their teaching work to their teaching assistants. By this means, on one hand, it will save the professors a lot of time for scientific research. On the other hand, because teaching assistants are not as busy as their professors, they can spend more time with students, and at the same time, gain a lot of experience.
What is more, while doing scientific or technologic research, the most essential and expecting advantage for professors is that they have the chance to contact novel ideas, fresh notion and new technology. And they can bring these novel ideas or notion to their classes and lectures. After all, most students are curious and long for learning something new. For example, ten years ago, the computer science students might be interested in windows XP. But now, I don’t believe that any student has the curiosity about it. To sum it up, from the analysis made above, I hold my point of view that university professors should spend more time doing research in stead of teaching students. |
